Trends change over time, so redecorating and renovating are inevitable. While furniture and fixtures can be used for new interior designs, old ones tend to lose their attractiveness. Perhaps they no longer look as good as they did when they were still new. Maybe their design is outdated and doesn’t match with the new pieces added. What do you do with your old furniture? Upcycling perhaps? Declutter your home so you can focus better on the things that really matter.
Whatever the reason may be, people will end up getting rid of some old, well used furniture. But what else can they do with it instead of breaking it apart or leaving it to rot?
Sell Online
One of the best ways to get rid of used furniture is to sell it. Someone may not want that classic old armoire, but another homeowner who is looking for vintage furniture may want it. As they say, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. This is also true with furniture.
So where can they be sold?
The best and easiest way to sell anything, including old furniture, is online. Consider selling furniture online using social media platforms like Facebook. It’s a good place for creating buy and sell groups of old, vintage stuff. There are also online marketplaces like eBay or Craigslist, where anyone can post almost anything and sell them.
Another idea is to have a garage sale. Besides furniture, sell any old clothes, decors, or anything that is only cluttering up the place and that someone may want or need.
Joining bazaars or finding merchants that also buy this stuff can also be a good idea of getting rid of old furniture while earning profit from it.
When deciding to sell, ensure that the furniture itself can still be used or at least be restored. Of course, make sure the price is worth the product.
Give Them Away
Know someone who’s been eyeing that old table set or sofa? If it’s no longer needed in the house, it may be time to give it away to somebody who may want or need it. It’s the easiest way to get rid of any old items.
Disclose any faults or damages the furniture may have. Ask your recipient if they still want or need it. It’s better than giving the furniture away when it’s all tattered and damaged, and the other person may not be able to use it properly.
You can also go the old-fashioned way by leaving the unwanted furniture out front or on the sidewalk. Somehow, someone will be interested in it and take it away, without any further hassle.

Upcycling for Another Purpose
For anyone who has a good pair of hands for crafting or is just patient enough to follow guides, many kinds of old furniture can be upcycled.
What this means is taking old furniture and turning it into something useful for another purpose. For example, an old dresser can be upcycled into a chic bathroom sink. Old shelves can be turned into an indoor garden or a nursery. An unused bedside table can be transformed into a play oven for your little girl. The internet has tons of ideas for upcycling various types of furniture.
Donate to Charity
There are tons of organisations that will gladly pick up some gently used or old furniture that can still be used. These organisations will then give it or sell it to people who need it more for less.
A few of these places include the following…
- Furniture Bank Association of North America (FBANA)
- Goodwill
- Salvation Army
- Habitat for Humanity ReStore
Furniture banks are likely located nearby. Call them, or drop by and ask about how a piece of furniture can be donated. A representative may help pick the furniture from a particular location, or those who want to donate can drop off the items to these banks.
Redecorating and renovating are not bad. Getting rid of old furniture is also not a bad thing, even if it has been in the family for quite some time. What’s terrible is leaving these things rotting away when they can be used by other people or for another purpose. Don’t be afraid to welcome the new by letting go of the old.
Have you ever thought about upcycling your old furniture?
