Christmas is such a busy time of year. Hitting the shops to get all the perfect gifts, wrapping up things at work for your time off (not to mention all the Christmas parties) and seeing all the extended family. Fitting in some quality family time can be difficult. As well as expensive. So here’s some fun indoor activities that you can enjoy as a family this festive season.
Decorating The Christmas Tree
A tradition in most households, putting up the Christmas tree is a great activity. Unravelling the lights, organising the tinsel and going through all the baubles and ornaments you had forgotten about from the previous year. Plus, you’ll end up unearthing lots of items you bought in the January sales and had completely forgot about! Decorating the tree is also lovely for reminiscing about Christmases gone with the old homemade baubles from the children.

Homemade Christmas Cards
This activity is something that should be started pretty soon, so you have plenty of time to get them delivered/posted before St Nick arrives. You’ll need lots of paper, glue, glitter and imagination and the little ones will really enjoy getting creative. Country Living has some great ideas to get you started including a snow globe shaker card!
Letters To Santa
Such a magical part of Christmas is encouraging the belief in Santa Claus. Leaving the sherry and mince pies out for Santa and the carrots for the reindeer the night before, and, of course, the list of what you would like (if you’ve been a good boy or girl) to the man himself. Some nice writing paper and a pencil or pen and let the children go wild!
Festive Games
There are 1001 festive games to keep you all entertained, but here’s three that are easy to set up and could provide hours of fun.
Candy Cane Hunt – The prize of all prizes! Hide a selection of candy canes around your home – the more obscure the place the better – and watch as your family roam around with excitement.
Reindeer Toss – All you need is a cardboard box, two antler-resembling branches and some homemade rings to toss.
Pin the Red Nose – Just like ‘pin the tail on the donkey’ but with a festive twist. Blindfolds at the ready!
Clear lots of space in your home for these activities so everyone can have fun without fear of knocking over the good china. Internal room dividers like these would help to open up your living space from two rooms to one large space – perfect for festive games.
A Clear Out
Although this may not sound so fun, decluttering is a great way to get rid of the old, so you can prepare for the influx of shiny new things. It will also increase your ‘feel good’ factor, as you will be helping a charity. Some charities, such as British Heart Foundation, tag all your donations so that they can keep track of how much you have raised for the charity in sales – another little bonus.
This should only take a morning to do, and the space that you will left with once the charity bags have been removed will be so satisfying.
Choices, Choices!
Choosing the festive entertainment is so important as the fate of Christmas day could rest on the film choices made…
Here’s a list of 10 films that are Christmas favourites to choose from:-
1. Home Alone
2. Jingle All the Way
3. Die Hard
4. Miracle On 34th Street
5. Elf
6. A Muppet’s Christmas Carol
7. The Nightmare Before Christmas
8. White Christmas
9. Santa Claus the Movie
10. The Holiday
Wrapping The Right Way
Wrapping Christmas presents is a real skill, something that takes practice and experience of wrapping unusual objects. A wrapping masterclass is a good way to get the whole family up to scratch on their skills so that they can be proud of the gifts they present each year. Good Housekeeping have this great selection of unusual gift wrapping ideas to really set your presents apart from the rest this year.
The Christmas Playlist
Whether you have a selection on Christmas CDs to look through, or you are compiling a Spotify playlist to play all through the big day, there’s so many choices to add in to all-important Christmas playlist.
Festive tunes can really get everyone in the Christmas mood, so work together as a family to choose which ones are included. Doing this now will get everyone excited for the festive season and all the delicious food, lovely gifts and relaxing time to come.
