Giving your kitchen a new lease of life can be an expensive project, if you’re looking to replace the whole kitchen you’re looking upwards of at least a £1,000, but there are affordable kitchen updates that can be made that don’t cost the earth.
Just a few small changes can make all the difference in your kitchen, and while they might need a little bit of effort on your part, they won’t cost nearly as much as a whole new kitchen would. Add a new lease of life to your kitchen with our quick and easy tips that won’t break the bank.
New Handles On Kitchen Cabinets
Give your kitchen cabinets a new look by replaces the handles that you have on them, there’s a huge variety of handles you can choose from and you can pick them up relatively cheap too. Make them more of a design feature with an intricate handle, or choose something a little more sleek and modern if you prefer the fuss-free look.
Paint Doors
Give your whole kitchen a freshened up look by painting the doors of the kitchen cabinets. You wouldn’t believe how much of a difference giving your cupboards a lick of paint will do for your kitchen. It’ll give it a new lease of life and will often make it look like a completely new kitchen. This is a great option if you don’t have the funds to get a new kitchen just yet or it’s a perfectly good kitchen that just needs some love and TLC. Most doors will unscrew pretty easily so you should be able to do it all yourself, especially if its a nice day outside.
Wallpaper
One thing you can do to update your kitchen and give its new lease of life is to wallpaper it. Maybe not the whole room but a feature wall perhaps. Before you freak out, wall papering is much easier than it used to be! I had images of a team of decorators with their huge wallpapering table and buckets of glue…argh!! However, these days it’s so much simpler. All you have to do is pick the paper you want, measure the area you intend to cover and go for it. Many wallpapers come pre-pasted making it so much easier and quicker to get the job done. If they can do it, anyone can!
I love that with wallpaper, within a few hours you can have a beautiful room or feature wall that’s ready to go and looking perfect! Whether you’re looking for something with a subtle awesome-ness or with a little more pizazz, Wallpaper from the 70’s has so much to choose from. I’m not sure I have the confidence to putt in our kitchen but my favourite is the image below… I love the beautiful green and gold and how well they blend together.
Add In Some Designer Lights
Ceiling lights are obviously essential, but functional lighting like under cabinet lights can be really helpful too, especially if you have a particularly dark kitchen. But we also love the addition of designer lights like plinth lights and cupboard lights to give your kitchen a luxurious look.
New Splashback
Splashbacks are essential for protecting your walls against the daily cooking dirt and grime that can occur when you use a kitchen. Give your kitchen a new look with some different tiles, or get a new coloured plastic splashback put in.
Tiles can be hard to clean, but it’s definitely worth the effort. We also love the look of up stands, which is basically a small continuation of your countertop up the wall.
Paint The Walls
Whether you make one wall a feature, or give the room a whole new colour, painting the walls will make a big difference to the space. We love sage green in the kitchen at the minute; it’s a really fresh and clean colour that looks great with wooden effects and a white, cream or grey kitchen.
Plus, we have quite a country style kitchen (living in the Cotswolds), which really gives it that extra edge without being too over the top.
Consider Removing Cabinet Doors
Not every cabinet door, but introducing some open shelving to your wall cabinets could definitely give your kitchen a new look. Of course, you’ll want to ensure that the shelves still look smart and clear, so make sure they’re only used for a minimal storage otherwise they could make the kitchen look untidy and cluttered.
Get New Appliances
Use the small appliances in your kitchen as a design feature in the room, there are some great colourful options available when it comes to toasters, kettles and microwaves so inject some colour this way. The baby blue Smeg appliances are really pretty and will add a gorgeous touch to the kitchen. If you aren’t very confident with adding colour, then this is a great way to do it in a more subtle way.
Get A New Worktop
Changing your kitchen worktop isn’t as expensive as you might think, plus it can change the whole theme of the room in an instant. Give your kitchen worktops a modern and sleek edge with a marble like top, or go for countryside chic with a wooden effect worktop.
There are so many different options to choose from unique fabrications, and most at affordable prices too. If you’re worktop could do with an update why not look into getting a new one. Most companies will even come and do all the measuring up for you so all you have to do is pick the design/colour you want to go with.
