Sustainable Christmas hampers can offer a simple, stress-free way to gift your friends and family with amazing items. Whether you make it yourself and fill it with all of their favourite products. Or perhaps you buy a ready made hamper so they can try a few new things.
However, did you know, gifting a hamper isn’t a new concept. This is actually something that began well before you or i were even alive. Apparently, this tradition originated back in the 11th century, with William the Conqueror. It was the then English monarch who introduced this concept to the English. Of course, back then the items found in the hampers would have been very different, and not eco friendly at all! Thankfully, things have changed since then as there are now many environmentally conscious brands offering sustainable hampers.
Here are a few ways you could gift an affordable and sustainable Christmas hamper this festive season…
Make It Yourself – From Scratch
OK, so there are really only two main ways you can gift a sustainable hamper. You either make it yourself, or you buy a ready made one. However, how you make it can make all the difference. For example, do you make the delicious goodies to go into their hamper? Or do you buy the products to fill up their hamper with?
Of course, making everything yourself has the more personal touch as it’s made with love and you’ve given up your time to do so. However, this could be quite time consuming, so it really depends on how much free time you have to do this.
Personally, i love to make everything i put into my friends and families hampers. I love the process of making large batches of cookies, Christmas cake bites, ginger biscuits and mince pies. Plus, it fills the house with so many amazing smells. Then of course there’s the fact you get to eat a lot of the leftovers!
For example, a few years ago i saw that my local garden centre was selling off some of their previous years empty hamper baskets. They were about £2.00 each so i stocked up on a few boxes so i could make up my own. I layered the bottom of the hamper with some shredded tissue paper i had lying around and began baking. In these hampers i included mince pie flavour cookies, ginger biscuits, mince pies and Christmas cake bites. Cooking in batch and including 2 of each into each sustainable hamper. I then closed the hamper and decorated it with ribbon and a label for each person.
Of course you could decorate it with anything you have to hand at home. Making the most of what you already have. You could also use some foliage from your garden instead. You can now even get biodegradable clear bags to put your food goodies in.
Make It Yourself – Store Bought
Then of course there’s always the option to create the sustainable Christmas hamper yourself by buying all the items you want to put in to it. Perhaps they love a certain brand of chocolate, or skincare. Make it personal buy filling it with everything you know they love to use. Then all you need to do is decorate it as you like.
Of course doing it this way won’t be as eco friendly as the items you buy are likely to have packaging on them. However, it is a much quicker way of doing it, and can still be great as a gift option.
Ready Made
Then of course you have the ready made option. A much quicker option as you don’t have to do anything yourself, and could be easier if you’re sending it to someone in a different country, not having to deal with delivering it.
Another great thing about buying a Christmas hamper ready made is that you can buy it from their favourite brand. Plus, the ready made hampers always look so beautifully designed, and often finished with professional looking bows and ribbons.
A great sustainable Christmas hamper i came across recently was this one from Luxe England (*Gifted). It comes filled to the brim with goodies such as – lavender bath bomb, a soy wax candle, a relax and soothe soap, lavender essential oil, a bag of lavender and sleepy shower streamers. The perfect box for someone wanting to relax and de-stress, which i guess is most of us these days! At just £29.95 it’s very affordable and comes beautifully packaged in 100% recyclable packaging.
How will you be doing your Christmas hampers this year? Will you go down the make it yourself route, or will you opt for a beautiful store bought one instead? We hope you have a wonderful sustainable Christmas this year!
