Most of us spend a good portion of the time at home. So, it’s important your living room is practical and comfortable. A place you can relax at the end of a long day, but also where you can entertain guests. That’s a lot of responsibility for one little room, and it can be easy to get bored if you haven’t redecorated in a while. It can cost a lot of money to update your home, but it also doesn’t have to. If you’re a bit clever and do your research, there’s plenty you can do on a smaller budget. With that in mind, here are some cheap and easy ways to refresh your lounge.
Traditional Oak Beams
Our fireplace is actually what inspired me to do a total re-vamp of our lounge area. Since we moved in 7 years ago, i’ve always hated the stuck on fire surround we have around our wood burning stove. It was there when we moved in and just isn’t our style.
Instead, i love the look of the traditional oak beams and a more simple looking fireplace. Once getting this sorted, it then led to changing the rest of the space. Updating it to our current style.
Include Furniture
Coffee tables or side tables are a great way of adding a bit of extra depth to your room. They can add focus and take some attention away from the TV. Or give you a little extra storage. They can even make the room feel more put together and less echoey. Bring out some of your personality in the pieces of furniture you choose.
Paint The Walls
Painting your walls is much faster and cheaper than full on redecoration and can be just as effective. Even if you choose the same colour, painting the walls will make them look cleaner, brighter and fresher instantly. However, maybe you are fed up of your current colour scheme and fancy going brighter, or lighter. Maybe you decorated when you were younger and your style has just matured, whatever your reason, a lick of paint always makes such a difference.
Accessorise
When you paint, try to stick to a light colour. This way you can accessorise with a huge variety of shades without having to worry about getting your accessories to match.
Even small touches such as adding gorgeous candle sticks to the mantle piece over your fire (if you have one), or on a side table can make a subtle difference to the way your room looks/feels. Plus, with the cooler weather settling in here in the UK, it’s time to start thinking about ways to keep warm and cozy and candles are such a simple way of doing this.
Soft Furnishings
Soft furnishings such as blankets, throw pillows and cushions can make a room feel cosy and comfortable. Lighting is a great way to create mood and atmosphere, and other accessories such as photo frames are a wonderful way to incorporate your personality into your décor. If you want to save even more money and make it unique, look online for some home crafts you could create yourself.
Remember, it’s often the little touches that make a big difference. I also think items such as traditional, shabby chic mirrors can make such a difference in the feel of a room, especially if you’re going for a country cottage kind of a look. They can make smaller rooms feel bigger, more open and brighter and can be a focal point for larger spaces.
Have A Move Around
Moving your furniture can change the feel of your whole room and even improve your mood. To create a more social space, have your seating facing each other instead of the TV. Bring book shelves into the open and move your wall hangings to different places. You’ll be amazed at what a massive difference a few small positional changes can make.
Dual Purpose Items
To save money and space, think about items that you can use for more than one purpose. Perhaps something like storage, especially if you have a smaller room/house where storage is hard to come by.
Changes like these look great on their own and can quickly bring new life into a tired room. But they can also be a great start to a larger redecoration plan if you decide you want to make further changes later on. Enjoy experimenting with new ideas to create a living space you can relax in.
