Being able to drink enough water is something I have really struggled with for as long as I can remember. Since I started my own business and became more focussed elsewhere, it’s only got worse if I’m being really honest. However, the benefits of drinking water are so good that i knew i just had to keep trying.
I’ve tried just about everything and although some things do work for a short period of time. Nothing seems to work in the longterm. So I guess you might be asking why I am writing an article with a solution. Well, as I said, I’ve tried so many things over the years. Even though some didn’t work for me. They might just work for someone else.
EDIT: Since writing this, i now drink almost a gallon of water a day, on a daily basis. How? I fill a gallon water bottle up with water at the start of each day and decant it in to a smaller bottle as and when i need it. This way, the smaller bottle doesn’t seem quite so intimidating. Plus, i can easily see how my water intake is going by looking at the larger jug. However, how much water should you drink a day? This obviously depends on the person, how much exercise they do, how active they are, how big they are…etc.
Tracking Apps
The benefits of drinking water are endless! We should all be trying to get more water in to our everyday routine. I’ve tried using all kinds of apps. From ones that beep to remind you to have a drink – not great if you’re in meetings a lot where you cant have things beeping at you. I found the Hydro app is the best one so far. It allows you to see how much you’ve drunk over the day. Keeping a close eye on what you are consuming. You can also set a daily target and you get an overview of this across the week. It has really shown me how little I do drink on a day to day basis. I have now turned off the beeping. So it now just pops up on my phone every half hour to remind me to drink.
Water Bottles
Another thing I tried to do was to ensure I had a bottle of water near me at all times. A visual way to remind me to keep drinking water. The amount of water bottles I’ve got through over the years is ridiculous. When I say water bottles I mean proper ones. Not the flimsy plastic ones you buy from shops with the water already in. My favourite for years was the Camelbak water bottle. A plastic BPA free water bottle that came in a range of sizes and colours. Although I loved it, the teat kept on breaking and it often became leaking after a few months. I also wasn’t a fan of the fact it was still a plastic bottle. Not all that environmentally friendly. So I decided when my current one brakes again, I would look into getting a glass one instead.
My current favourite way to get more water in is to fill my 2.2 litre bottle full to the brim. I then de-cant it into a smaller water bottle that I take everywhere with me. This way I can see how much I’m drinking from what’s left in the larger bottle. Plus, putting it into a smaller bottle doesn’t look quite so daunting. Looking at 2.2 litres and knowing you have to get that in you somehow!

Make Water More Interesting
Another thing that has worked for me when I need an extra helping hand to ensure I drink more is to put a very small amount of squash into my water bottle. I don’t know why but I have always found I drink slightly more and more easily when it has some kind of juice in with the water. Maybe it helps it glide down my throat, I’m not sure.
However, if plain water just isn’t your ‘cup of tea’ why not try to add some sparkle to it…literally! get yourself a Sodastream and add a few bubbles to your water – or drink of choice. I know some people find drinking sparkling water to be much easier than drinking plain water. Obviously you can add the bubbles to other kinds of drinks too but water being the healthiest option obvs! My husband loves to drink Henry’s (orange juice mixed with lemonade), so he now does it with his own sparkling water. Again, a healthier option and just as tasty. A great little device if you love to make homemade cocktails or entertain guests a lot. You could impress them with a weird and wonderful creation! Plus, if you want to love it even more, by using something like a Sodastream, you don’t have to buy bottled fizzy drinks so you’re saving the planet bottle by bottle. Reducing the use of plastic now to make a difference later.
Anyway, these are a few of the ways I have tried to get more water into my life on a day to day basis. Let me know what you have tried and if it has worked for you. How much water should you drink a day – enough to make you feel good in yourself! The benefits of drinking water are amazing for every part of your body, so make the effort to get hydrated.
