Most of the stigma about marijuana that was circulating for decades is now beginning to vanish. We can thank social media for that, as well as the scientists who shared their knowledge. People started to realise that marijuana really is a health benefit, rather than a drug. Helping with things such as insomnia, pain, anxiety, and so much more. So, how important is the endocannabinoid system?
All those government laws that are still in existence are pretty hard to change. It usually takes about fifty years or so for something to really change. In the large scheme of things, that’s not a lot of time. But, when we compare it to our lifetimes, which average around 82 years, that’s a whole lot.
When it was illegal to buy weed at the store, the prices were higher. As soon as they legalised it, almost everyone could afford it. There’s a lot of economics behind that, but that just raises a different question. How many other things has the government made illegal that are actually good things? Only the future generations could answer that.
Around thirty years ago, researchers were experimenting with the effects that THC had on the human brain. By accident, they uncovered a completely new system in our bodies. It’s the endocannabinoid system, and it explains all of the things that happen when you smoke weed.
The Endocannabinoid System
This system is responsible for controlling how we feel pain, how our intestinal systems send signals for hunger, and it also helps with sleep control, insomnia, inflammation, and mood elevation. When you think about it, that’s what happens when you smoke marijuana. Everything seems a bit more relaxed, and you start laughing at random things.
When you’re with a few more friends, the atmosphere livens up, and everyone is happier. Additionally, everyone gets hungry, and you all order some pizza. After which everyone just wants to go to bed. People used to think those were just stoner things, but now we realise that it’s an essential healing process. While all of this is happening on the outside, our body systems are working intensely.
Millions of receptors interact with the CBD and the THC present in the plant. The endocannabinoids get metabolised in the liver, and they start flowing through our bloodstream, you can click this link to find out more. Next, they interact with our central and peripheral nervous systems. Both are directly connected to our brains. The central nervous system controls how we perceive pain.
That’s why many older adults are starting to use CBD oils daily. On the other hand, the peripheral nervous system controls inflammation. If you happen to have a severe injury, getting your hands on some CBD might be the best thing you can do. It’s much better than painkillers because people can get addicted to them. CBD, however, is not addictive. You can’t develop a habit from it.
Is It Important?
Many people ask themselves just how important the ECS is. It’s just as important as our digestive, respiratory, or nervous system. Without it, we wouldn’t be able to be in homeostasis. That means our bodies would never be balanced. The first and primary reason the ECS exists is to assure that there is a state of homeostasis in our organism.
Even if you’ve never been in the same room as CBD, your body will still produce endocannabinoids. However, if you ingest oils, edibles, or if you rub creams on your body, you increase the amount. That gives you a feeling of relief. As time goes by, we realise that many more processes are connected and influenced by this newly discovered system.
Some of those processes include motor control, learning and memory, bone remodelling and growth, metabolism rate, cardiovascular function, and liver function. There are so many things about it that we still don’t know for sure. The only thing that we can do is let the researchers do their jobs, and only time will tell what sort of discoveries we will see in the future.
