However well-intentioned you may be. You’re bound to encounter situations and problems that prevent you from exercising on occasions. Do you secretly feel relieved that you get a break from your exertions? Or do you find yourself seething with frustration at the interruption to your schedule? Whichever attitude you take, missing out on your workout will have a knock-on effect. So what can you do to prevent exercise problems from happening in the first place?
Time Problems
It could be a call from the school to say your child is ill and needs to go home, or you might be preparing for a holiday or a party. Perhaps you have to prioritise other urgent chores that just can’t wait, or it could be that you’ve had to bring some work home with you. Whatever the cause for your loss of time, deal with the problem and then see what options you have left for fitting in some exercise.
For example, you could collect your little one from school, get them tucked up in bed and nip out later on when your partner is home. Or you could do something else instead. If you normally go to the gym but won’t have time to drive back after dealing with the problem, pop out on your bike or go for a run. If it’s something that you need to sit at your desk and deal with, try fixing your papers near your exercise bike so you can have a pedal while you work.
Motivation Problems
Your frame of mind will have a lot to do with how you approach the reason for your inability to exercise. If you are feeling a sense of relief, you need to ask yourself if there’s a way you could be making your exercise regime more enjoyable. Are you forcing yourself to go for a run when if you thought about it you’d be much happier having a blast on a cross trainer? Perhaps playing a sport is more your thing than pounding the streets. There are activities like trampolining that don’t seem like they are very hard to work but are actually excellent at burning calories and building muscle. As you age, you may find that you no longer find activities you enjoyed when you were younger as easy to take part in.
If you’re struggling, check with your doctor and see if they can help or suggest alternatives for you, or if you are in a position to go private, contact a specialist service like an Orthopaedics hospital London and book a consultation. Even things like booking yourself in for regular massage appointments or having the best infinity massage chair at home to keep your muscles loose and to relax you after a good workout. Having little things like this to look forward to and to treat yourself to afterwards should keep yo more motivated.
Mood & Motivation
Mood and motivation can be linked but are not the same thing. You can be perfectly happy in your life and still lack the motivation to tackle a particular problem. However, if you are normally enthusiastic about working out and you find that you no longer get the same pleasure out of it, there could be a cause for concern. Losing interest in activities you normally enjoy can be a sign of stress, anxiety and depression, so it’s a good idea to get to the bottom of what is causing your low mood so that you can deal with it.
There are many ways to exercise, and if you’re not enjoying the activities you’re currently doing, there are plenty of alternatives!
