Scotland is a beautiful country. With wide lochs and soaring highlands making up stunning vistas, it has become a widely sought-after place to visit. And there are fewer cities in the world more beautiful than Edinburgh, the capital. One of the best cities in the UK, Edinburgh has a long, fascinating history as well as plenty of café’s and shops to explore. For first timers, we’ve assembled a guide including some great tips while visiting Edinburgh. How best to explore Scotland’s most cultural city.
Visit Edinburgh Castle
The number one consideration for all tourists visiting Edinburgh is to visit the castle. Sitting atop a great hill, it presides over the rest of the city with noble grandiosity. It’s a must-see for anyone, even if you’re in the city for just a few days.
Built in the 7th Century, the castle has fortified Scotland ever since and acts as an imposing warning to any would-be invaders. Make sure you get there early to beat all the crowds and soak up the atmosphere well by exploring all the buildings.
Wander Down Royal Mile
Edinburgh’s main thoroughfare is its oldest and busiest street. Packed with shops and cafés, it runs from the castle all the way to the Palace of Holyrood house. The Mile is always busy and there’s plenty of stuff going on.
It’s perhaps at its busiest in August while the Edinburgh Fringe Festival is taking place. From street bagpipes to fire-juggling, you need about a million eyes to be able to take it all in. On top of all the other things, there’s also plenty of churches and old buildings to visit as well!

Have A Wee Dram
Scotland is famous for its whisky and although you may not be much of a whisky drinker, you must try one from one of Scotland’s hundreds distilleries. Scotch Whisky is not for the weak-stomached, however, as it is very strong and packs a punch.
Our recommendation is to visit one of Edinburgh’s many whisky rooms for a whisky-tasting experience. That way you get to try a whole range of beverages without spending too much money. And if you’re not a whisky fan, there’s also plenty of gin to down!
Climb The Scott Monument
Perhaps one of the most gothic and the most beautiful landmarks in Edinburgh, the Scott Monument truly is a marvel to behold. To get a good idea just how spectacular it is, you must climb to the top and get a marvellous view of the city. Always best at sunrise.
Ascend To Arthur’s Seat
Edinburgh is honed in by three volcanic hills (now extinct, of course) and one such hill is Arthur’s Seat. Though a bit of a climb, it is definitely worth getting to the top. The views are spectacular and you can see for miles.
If you haven’t got much time, then you can climb Dunsapine Loch and walked up to the summit in about ten minutes. Either way is a definite recommendation.
