Do Full Laundry Loads
A half-load setting saves very little energy so a full load will be much more efficient. Wash loads less often but more frequently.
Use The Eco Setting
The eco setting heats water slower and uses less energy on your boiler or dishwasher. The same results are achieved, but it takes a little more time.

Turn Off Standby Mode
Check your power strips for any plugs on standby! Appliances like your TV will continue to consume energy if they are not switched off at the wall. This can cost the average UK household £35 per annum. Hive plugs allow you to quickly turn off your TV at the wall by simply tapping the app.

Be Careful With The kettle
Most people fill up the kettle when making tea or coffee. This is a massive waste of energy in a country that uses around £68 million worth. It could be as much as a third less energy to fill your kettle to the right level than you were using.
Switch To LED Bulbs
Traditional incandescent bulbs are very energy inefficient. Modern LEDs do the opposite and are more efficient. They also last longer, so they are less wasteful. Smart LED bulbs such as Hive Lighting can help save you even more energy because you can turn them on and off remotely.
Make Use Of Your Slow Cooker
Both slow cookers and air fryers are faster than the stove or oven, so you’ll save money. A slow cooker is a great choice since they are one of the most efficient kitchen appliances.
However, if you only have something small to cook, then an air fryer might be the better way to go.
Unplug Chargers
When it comes to looking for ways to conserve electricity at home, turning off plugs and chargers is as simple as it gets.
People are charging their phones, laptops, and MP3 players unnecessarily all over the country. Instead, unplug your device as soon as it’s fully charged.
This will not only save energy but also prolong your battery life. You could also reduce your electricity bills by about £60 per year.
Close Your Curtains At Night
It’s important to make the most of the natural heat that comes from the sun during the day. Your home will retain heat even when it is dark. These curtains will help retain heat in the room, but they should not be draped over radiators.
Reduce The Temperature
Today’s washing machine detergents are so effective that you don’t need to run them higher than 30 degrees Celsius. Use cold water to clean your clothes instead of working your water heater harder!
Update Your Heating System
Newer models of boilers are incredibly efficient at heating your hot water, and with energy as a whole so you could save you as much as £580 per year. Lower your energy costs with a simple boiler check.
Other Ways To Save Money At Home
There are other ways you can save money at home and save money according to companies such as Loan Corp.
If you have the money to spend on the points below, you will see that money back when you’re able to lower your home’s energy consumption.
Update Your Electrics
You might find your electrics are perfectly fine, however, if not, you could be using more energy than you for the electrical items in your home.
Of course, you will need the help of a professional to ensure your electricity supply is safe to use. With MyBuilder, you can find Edinburgh-based electricians (or whatever location you are in), that you can trust to get the work done for a fair price. Their reviews are a valuable resource for anyone looking for electricians, and you can read what other customers have to say about the quality of their work and their service. Plus, you might even find you don’t need much doing to update the electrics in your home.
Fit Radiator Reflector Panels
Reflector panels placed behind radiators on exterior walls can increase heat transfer to your rooms, making them more comfortable. These panels are inexpensive and simple to install. Aluminium foil can be used to create a similar effect if you don’t have the budget to go buying the real thing. Without it, your radiators will be working harder to heat your walls, rather than the rooms.

Draughtproof Doors & Windows

Yes, it’s so easy to forget to turn plugs and things off. Thank you so much for stopping by.
Hi Becky,
I always double down on power saving tips because my wife and I spend most time house sitting. We want to save on energy bills for homeowners. For example, we are sitting in a big farmhouse in semi rural NJ now. Even though it felt like 44 C this whole prior week we kept air conditioning off – wall units (very old house) – until we spent time in rooms. Never mind that my bedroom was 92 F at night before turning on the AC unit LOL.

Oh wow that is warm!! I love the idea of house sitting. Do you do it all across the US?
I have recently started unplugging my phone once it reaches full charge, as I have heard it helps prolong battery life. Love that that also contributes to energy reduction! I also use LED’s and only do laundry when I have a full load. 🙂
It makes such a difference. Just by unplugging things and turning things off standby we saved £5 last month. Not a lot of money but it all adds up over the year.
