How To Make Overnight Oats
OK, so before going into all the fancy recipe ideas, let’s start with the basic overnight oats recipe. You can then apply this to each overnight oats with protein powder recipe below, making the slight changes as indicated on each. It’s pretty much the same as making porridge with protein powder, only it’s cold, and made the night before.
We have tried and tested MANY types of oats over the years and the best ones seem to be the Scottish rolled oats. They give it a creamier texture than most other types of oats. The amount of oats you use really depends on your situation – if you’re on a diet, trying to eat fewer carbs, on a reverse diet…etc.

However, we recommend somewhere around 40 grams of oats, to approx 200 MLS of either milk or water. NOTE – if you aren’t using protein powder, drop the milk/water down to around 150 MLS). This creates a slightly more creamy, loose consistency. So, if you prefer your oats to have less liquid, and be more firm, simply reduce the amount of milk or water you use. This is a very personal thing so you may need to tweak it slightly to suit your taste.
Overnight Oats – How To Make The Basic Recipe
The ingredients for overnight oats are as follows (or see the recipe card below)…
- 40 grams of oats – quick oats or rolled oats work best
- 150 MLS of milk or water – without protein powder
- 200 MLS of milk or water – with protein powder (you can use normal milk, oat milk, almond milk, soy milk, coconut milk…etc)
- 1 scoop of protein powder (optional) – You can use whey protein or a vegan protein powder
Place all of the dry ingredients into a mixing bowl and stir well (if you’re adding protein powder). Otherwise, simply add the milk, give it a good stir and that’s it! Make sure you leave it in an airtight container in the fridge overnight.

Recipe Combinations Below
You can have overnight oats without protein powder, you would simply remove the protein powder, and add in slightly less milk. Of course, in your overnight oats, you can use plant-based protein powders instead if you’d prefer. This base recipe for overnight oats is under 300 calories per serving and makes for an easy breakfast, no matter how busy mornings are for you.
For the best results, make sure you leave your healthy protein overnight oats to soak for at least 6 hours – longer if you can. Then when you’re ready to eat, simply give it a good stir and add any toppings you wish.
Nutritional Value In Overnight Oats
Of course, this does depend on what you are putting in, or on top of this simple breakfast recipe. However, for the basic recipe above, here is a breakdown in calories and macros…
- How many grams of protein in overnight oats – with protein powder – 20 grams. Without protein powder – 6 grams
- How many carbs in overnight oats – 36 grams
- Are porridge oats high in fibre – there are roughly 5 grams of fibre per serving
Making Overnight Oats Ahead Of Time
In case you are looking to meal prep, or simply make your overnight oats in advance, it’s good to know how long overnight oats last. As long as you keep them in the fridge, they should be OK for up to 3 days in advance. But, can overnight oats go bad? Yes, they can! As with all food, it does have a cut-off date. Personally, I’ve never gone beyond the 3 days as I prefer to have them fresher than that. We wouldn’t advise keeping them any longer than this.
However, you can make the dry part of the recipe ahead of time so all you have to do is add the milk and put it in the fridge. When to eat overnight oats is up to you, and could depend on when you put them in the fridge to soak. For the best consistency, you should leave your overnight oats for 24 hours, however, overnight is perfectly fine as well.
Make sure you put your overnight oats into a container larger than you think you’ll need as they do expand. How much do overnight oats expand? This really depends on how much liquid you put in with them, and if you include chia seeds. If you’ve added chia seeds, this will make them expand a lot more!
Below are some overnight oats variations to suit your taste and preferences. If like me, you don’t like bananas, for example, there are many recipes for overnight oats without bananas…

You can always top with extra fresh mixed berries when ready to eat.
Apple Pie – Oats, vanilla protein powder, half an apple, apple sauce and cinnamon. Blackberry & Apple Fool – Oats, vanilla protein powder, cinnamon, a handful of blackberries and half an apple. If you have time to stew the blackberries, apple and cinnamon, then do so as it tastes amazing. For stewing, once cooked in a pan, leave to cool slightly and add to your overnight oats before placing in the fridge. If you aren’t stewing, simply scatter the blackberries and apples over your oats when ready to eat. You could also add a little apple sauce to give it a sharper taste.
Raspberry Ripple – Oats, vanilla protein powder, raspberries, raspberry sauce, freeze-dried raspberries. Add everything but half of the freeze-dried raspberries and the raspberry sauce into your oat batter and place in the fridge. When ready to eat, scatter a few more freeze-dried raspberries over the top along with your raspberry sauce.
Strawberries & Cream – Oats, vanilla or strawberry protein powder, strawberries, white chocolate, coconut oil and strawberry sauce. Add some chopped strawberries to your overnight oats after adding the liquid and mix well. Then melt the white chocolate and coconut oil in a small bowl and drizzle over the top to cover the whole area, and place in the fridge overnight. When ready to go, crush up 3 biscoff biscuits and scatter across the top, along with a little extra spread if you wish.

Use the basic overnight oats recipe as normal, and add half of the chocolate drops into the batter. Then melt half of the chocolate drops in a bowl with one tsp of coconut oil and combine well. Pour this melted chocolate over the top of the oat batter and make sure it covers the sides. Then place in the fridge overnight. When ready to eat, drizzle your salted caramel sauce over the top of the hardened chocolate and enjoy!

Extra Oaty – Oats, protein powder of your choice, honey and a small handful of granola. Add everything but the granola and honey to your batter and place in the fridge. When ready to eat drizzle a little extra honey over the top along with your granola.

Regarding the berries, maybe put a little honey on them to make them sweeter. Ooh yes, cinnamon and apple are always a great combo.
These are some amazing recipes and listened. Nicely combined. And yes, whenever j eat them I sometimes cook them at night it gets the job done for morning but I never ate it at night. Thought a great idea too. I like the Mango, cinnamon, and apple as combinations. Berries are too sour for me in the morning. Loved reading it. Xx
