Even the most dedicated, motivated person can need an extra push from time to time. There isn’t one person in the world who hasn’t had an off day, or a low day when it comes to exercise at some point in time. A lot of women – and men, have been exactly where you are right now on your fitness journey. This feeling is only temporary, don’t let it stop you or hold you back from your goals.

With the amount of information out there and beautiful-looking Instagram fitness girls, it can be hard not to feel down on yourself from time to time. Or to even start comparing yourself to them, asking why you don’t look as good as they do. Why your glutes aren’t as big, your arms aren’t as defined, or perhaps your waist isn’t as small. We’ve all been there at some time or another, no one feels great about themselves day in, day out.
You might have the same goal as someone else when it comes to fitness, but we all have different starting points – genetics, time available to workout, money to spend on personal trainers…etc. So how can we possibly start to compare that? Remember it’s your journey to take in any direction you like, so put your blinkers on and have a laser-like focus on your goal, no one else’s goal.

How To Stay Motivated
Working out day in and day out, or keeping to a routine can be hard at times, whether it’s life getting in the way, or you just don’t feel in the mood to exercise. However, when it comes to physical fitness, doing something is better than doing nothing at all. If you really don’t have time to go to the gym, perhaps you could go for a walk with the family instead. Or maybe you could do a quick 15-minute workout routine at home while the dinner is cooking. Sometimes the most simple of workouts can bring you the most amount of joy and satisfaction.

Or perhaps you’ve had a slip up by eating a bit too much junk food. The occasional mistake isn’t going to de-rail all of your progress up to that point. Instead, work out why it happened, learn from it and move on, leave it in the past.
Leading a healthy lifestyle isn’t about being perfect 100% of the time, that’s not sustainable long-term. Living this kind of lifestyle is more about finding balance and enjoyment in what you’re doing, whilst aiming for your end goal.
Take care of your body by exercising and giving it the right amount of nourishment, but also by being kind when things do go wrong – which they will. A lot of people tend to forget to be kind to themselves when a failure occurs. Being annoyed at yourself, or punishing yourself isn’t going to help. A healthy body is also a happy body – if you aren’t happy, you aren’t healthy.

Goal Setting
Try not to set yourself an unrealistic goal. For example, if you’ve never done any kind of weight lifting, setting yourself the goal of being able to deadlift 120kg in 6 months isn’t going to happen! Instead, try to set yourself smaller, more achievable goals that you can tick off as you go.
These smaller goals will allow you to see progress much quicker, and will likely give you that boost of confidence and determination you need to keep going.

For example, if your goal is to be able to deadlift 120kg and you’re starting at 40kg, perhaps give yourself the goal of increasing the weight by 5 -10kg each month. That way you will keep hitting your goals more often, while still on the way to your ultimate goal. You might even find that along the way your purpose of training changes. You’re less focused on the end goal and actually start to enjoy the process.
Another tip when it comes to goal setting is to make sure it’s not an aesthetic goal. Aiming for a certain look, or body type may seem like a great goal, but it will quickly start becoming de-motivating when you don’t see quick changes. Instead, focus on gaining physical strength and enjoying your workouts and the aesthetic goals will come sooner than you think.
