There’s something wonderful about a UK staycation. Staying at home when you’ve got time off work. Yes, it’s fun to travel abroad and explore new countries, but have you ever really explored your own doorstep? If you spend your holiday time seeing what’s close to you, you might discover something exciting about what’s around you.
Perhaps you’ll travel further afield and visit a different city. Or go to the country. Or decide to take a campervan on a road trip to see as much as possible. Here are some other great reasons why your vacation should be a staycation this year. There’s so much to get out of the UK whether it is near or far from your home.

No Travel Time
Unless you want to journey from one end of the country to another. Then you really can have a holiday with no travel time whatsoever. Some of the very worst things about going to a different country include queuing to check in at the airport. Then queuing to get onto the plane, and then waiting to get your luggage once you land. Then there are the security checks to contend with. Even if you’re travelling on a short haul flight. Planes are still cramped and uncomfortable unless you’re spending a fortune on first class.
If you don’t want to have to deal with any of that, you don’t have to – have a staycation instead. You can be as comfortable as you choose and if you’re not a fan of airports, you can stay away from them quite easily. All you need to do is get in the car, on a train, perhaps a bus or coach and be travelling towards your destination of choice. You’ll arrive fresh and ready to enjoy yourself rather than tired from a long flight.
Hire A Caravan
In the United Kingdom, in terms of landscape, we have something of everything. There are mountains and lakes, beaches and wooded forests. Stunning places to walk along clifftops and plenty of footpaths that will take you off on wild adventures. Or into chocolate box villages complete with thatched cottages and beautifully kept village greens. No matter what kind of scenery makes you smile, you’ll be able to find it somewhere in the UK. Since this country is relatively small, you won’t have to travel far from home to get there either.
Hiring a camper van is so much easier to do these days as there are so many to choose from. Whether you’re looking for something for just the two of you for a romantic getaway under the stars. Or if you’re looking for a family sized 6 berth caravan for the entire family. My parents loved their hire caravan so much, they went out and bought themselves one of their own. Which they had designed exactly how they wanted. So if you’re thinking about buying one too, maybe hire one first and see how you find it before taking the plunge.
A caravan is so much cheaper than staying in hotel after hotel. Plus, it gives you more opportunity to travel wherever you like and further afield as well. Perhaps you’d love to go and visit the northern most point in Scotland. But after hotel costs and the travel up there, you just couldn’t afford to stay long enough to make it worth your while. Well now you can! Plus by hiring a caravan, you can take all manner of things with you that you’d never have be able to fit into a car. Oh, and even better, if you have some picky eaters going with you, they can take everything with them in the caravan.
You’ll Save Money
By staying at home, or at least in your own country, you’ll save in a number of different ways. This is true even if the cost of living is going up. Think of all the big costs associated with foreign travel. The airfare is expensive, and unless you’re going to stay in a hostel or budget hotel then accommodation can cost a lot too.
Then there’s the food and drink and tickets to attractions. Plus putting your pets away into kennels or catteries can be expensive. Another necessary, but fundamental expense of travelling further afield is travel insurance. Which can be very costly, especially if you have a medical issue.
Accommodation
If you stay at home, you’ll have no accommodation costs (other than what you’d pay anyway for your home) if you decide to venture in the day before returning home. Costs, in general, will still be less even if you do decide to rent accommodation, and you will likely have minimal travel costs. You might decide to drive somewhere or take a train, but those costs will be nowhere near as much as a plane ticket would cost.
When it comes to food, you can eat out, of course, and if you do choose to go to a restaurant, you can look online to find the best ones near you, and possibly even splash out on somewhere you wouldn’t normally go with the money you’ve saved from staying at home. You can also buy food to cook at home, and that can be lots of fun. When you’ve got no work to worry about you can take your time and really enjoy the creative process of cooking. Sometimes the best weekends my husband and I have are the ones where we have no plans and we potter around the house or the garden and make delicious food together…and make it fun!
You Can Be Spontaneous
When you have a staycation, you can be completely spontaneous, which is a fun way to live for a week or two, although this is perhaps not necessarily a good idea full time. Wake up in the morning and go online or search through local magazines and newspapers to find an event or place that interests you and head off there. Work out your options the day before if you want to buy tickets online in advance, as it can be cheaper that way for some attractions. The point is, you don’t have to plan every step of your holiday out right at the beginning, and you can allow it to flow along in a stress-free kind of way.

You’ll Be Comfortable
No matter how fun or thrilling travelling abroad is, there is no place like home. If you love your home comforts, the food you’re used to, your own bed, and TV that you can understand then staying at home might be the best thing for you. This is especially the case if you find you lose a lot of holiday time getting acclimatised to the heat or the culture of wherever it is you have gone to.
Even if you choose to go to a different town on your vacation and stay in a hotel, there will still be enough familiar sights to keep you happy and content so that you can concentrate on experiencing what the UK has to offer in terms of holiday excitement.
You Can Always Go Next Year
Just because you choose to have a staycation this year, that doesn’t mean you can’t go abroad next year. In fact, staying at home means you have a lot more time to save up and plan exactly where it is you’re going to go, and that can make your next ‘hot holiday’ even better than it might otherwise have been.
