In less than a month now, every home will be visited by Father Christmas and his reindeer to deliver presents – or coal to every child. No doubt the North Pole is a hive of activity as his elves finish getting the toys ready for Christmas day. But what should you leave for Santa and his reindeers?
Do you remember when you were younger, leaving out a Christmas eve plate for Santa? Perhaps it’s a tradition you still do, either just for yourself or with your children now. The excitement of coming down Christmas morning to see what he and his reindeers have eaten – and of course what he’s put under the tree!
Leaving a plate out for Santa isn’t just for those with young children – adults, you should get in on the magic of it too!
What To Do If You Don’t Have A Chimney
If you want to leave some sustenance out for Father Christmas but don’t have a chimney, don’t worry, you don’t need one! Those without a chimney can leave a plate by a window, radiator, or even simply next to your Christmas tree.
According to a a theoretical physicist at the University of Warwick, Santa operates outside of the laws of physics to deliver presents. Meaning he can fit himself down something as small as a radiator pipe to get in to deliver your gifts.
What Do People Leave Santa?
Some people think it should be a glass of milk and a mince pie – along with a few tasty carrots. However, others think it should be a glass of something a bit stronger and perhaps some cookies so he gets a bit of variety from house to house. Then of course there’s those who will plate up a delicious platter of homemade sweet treats for Father Christmas to enjoy.
Of 250 people surveyed, here is a snapshot of what they have left Santa and his reindeer in past years…

- Cookies – 17%
- Milk – 63.4%
- Brandy – 12%
- Beer – 10.4%
- Whisky – 9.6%
- Wine – 4.4%
- Carrots (for the reindeers) – 40+%

Fresh Ideas For Santa
Bored of leaving the same old thing out for Santa every Christmas? Here are a few ideas to help you spice things up a bit…
A mug of tea – Perhaps a mug of your favourite cup of tea to help him get through a busy night of delivering toys. You could even get him a tea subscription to go with it. (Why can’t giving go both ways!)
Chocolate – Maybe a bar of his favourite chocolate could be a nice little treat – and something different!
Think savoury – You never know, he might be bored of all those sweet treats and be dreaming of something a little more savoury. Perhaps a homemade sausage roll could be nice with his glass of milk.
Mulled Wine – Thinking along the festive lines, perhaps a warm glass of mulled wine would be just what he’d love to quench his thirst.
Budget friendly – If you’re on a bit of a budget this year, perhaps you could simply leave a bag of crisps, or a handful of nuts instead. You don’t have to go all out – especially if you can’t afford to!
However, when thinking about what to leave Santa this Christmas, you don’t want him to be so drunk he can’t fly his sleigh – so perhaps just a little glass!
The Meaning Of Santa
For some people, the idea of Santa left them when they were still a young child. Perhaps being told the truth, or finding out some other way. Or perhaps, even as an adult, you choose to still believe in the jolly old saint nick who spreads joy and happiness.
Personally, i still like to believe in him and what he means to so many. There’s so much magic in believing – no matter how silly it might sound. My husband and i still do stockings for each other – silly little gifts that don’t mean much – but mean so much at the same time.
Everyone coming together to spread joy and happiness. Whether simply through spending time with loved ones, or celebrating with friends. Putting up the tree, the lights and the Christmas decorations. I could sit and watch the fairy lights on the tree for hours on end – twinkling in such a friendly way. No matter how bad things are, a simple Christmas tree and a few fairy lights can make anything feel better.
