What Are The Main Ingredients In Fresh Tortillas?
This vegan tortilla recipe is actually very simple, only using basic ingredients you probably already have in your pantry.
Main Ingredients
- 130g all-purpose flour
- 130g wholewheat flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 40 mls oil (neutral flavour like olive oil, avocado, canola, sunflower)
- 100 mls (half cup) water at room temperature

Flour
You can use pretty much any flour you like so you could even make them gluten-free tortillas if you wanted to. The most popular flour to use is plain or all-purpose flour.
However, you could also use whole wheat flour if you wanted them to be a little healthier and more nutritionally dense.
Even oatmeal flour, or spelt flour would work in this recipe if you wanted to try something a little different.
Oil
For the oil in this great recipe you could use olive oil, coconut oil, or any vegetable oil you have to hand. However, coconut oil will give your tortilla dough a slightly sweeter taste so don’t use this type of oil if you don’t want them to be sweet.
Olive oil is the most popular oil to use, and the one we have used in this recipe.
Are Flour Tortillas Vegan?
No, not all flour tortilla recipes are vegan, even many of the store-bought ones also aren’t vegan. However, more and more brands are starting to make their tortillas vegan these days.
These flour based tortillas are vegan however and are a great way to make your own tortillas – whether you’re vegan or not.

How To Serve These Soft Tortillas
You can serve your homemade flour tortillas with any of your favourite fillings but we love them cold with – smashed avocado, a sprinkling of vegan cheese and some fried vegan ‘chicken’ strips.
Or perhaps you could go more along the Mexican food route and fill your round tortilla with black beans, vegan cheese and topped with some spicy guacamole.
Of course, you can also serve your soft flour tortillas warm by placing them back into a pan once filled with your simple ingredients. Lightly grilling each side until they go slightly crisp.
You could even just have one plain, dipped into our Homemade Hummus for a super quick and nutritious snack.

How To Make This Vegan Flour Tortilla Recipe
To Make The Dough Balls
In a large mixing bowl, mix together all of the dry ingredients – flour, salt and the baking powder.

Then stir in the oil with a spoon until a crumble-like mixture starts to form. The mixture should just be able to stick together if you pinch it.

Next, slowly stir in the water a little at a time until a dough ball forms.
Once you have your dough ball, tip it out on to a lightly floured surface and knead with the heel of your hands until it feels smooth.
At this point your dough should feel slightly tacky, but not sticky. If it sticks to your fingers, try adding a little more flour to your dough a little at a time.

Once you have the right consistency, divide your raw dough ball into 4 individual sections and roll into balls.

Then flatten each ball and return the disks back to your large mixing bowl and cover with damp paper towels.
For the best results, leave them to rest for at least 20 minutes before cooking.
To Cook The Dough
Once your dough has rested for at least 20 minutes, roll each disk out on to a lightly floured surface with a rolling pin, or you could use the bottom of a flat casserole dish.

You want to aim to roll your flat disks out as thinly as possible to get the best cooked consistency. The dough will try to spring back so press down hard while rolling them out.
Once you have rolled out all of your tortillas, set aside and start to warm a nonstick skillet pan over medium heat. (you may need to turn it up to a medium-high heat if your pan is not hot enough).
Once your hot pan is ready to go, place the first tortilla in the centre and cook for approximately 30 – 40 seconds on each side. Your tortilla is cooked when it begins to bubble up and has light brown spots on either side. (If your tortilla goes brown before 30 seconds, turn the heat down slightly).

If you plan to have your homemade tortillas right away, place your cooked tortillas under a kitchen towel to keep them warm. However, if you want to have them cold later, simply place on a wire rack to cool so that they don’t sweat on top of each other.

Notes
How To Store These Traditional Tortillas?
Once you have allowed your cooked tortilla wraps to cool completely, you can keep them for up to 3 days in an airtight container in the fridge, or somewhere cool and out of direct sunlight.
However, if you want to keep them for a longer period of time, you can place them into a freezer bag and store them in the freezer for up to one month.
Changing The Flavour
If you wanted to change this recipe up a little, you could try adding a little smoked paprika to your dough, or perhaps some mixed herbs.
Another simple way to change these whole wheat tortillas would be to add some nutritional yeast to give them a slightly cheesy taste.
Once you have the basic recipe, there are so many other optional ingredients you can add to the recipe to make it your own.
