If your child’s school was able to hold their sports day this year, chances were you probably weren’t able to attend, because of the pandemic. Many parents have been left disappointed, unable to support their children and experience their sporting triumphs.
So, why not create a DIY sports day from home, for your child and their friends to enjoy together. This way, yourself and other parents can get together to witness the children’s sporting prowess and have fun together. If you have a suitable outside space, you can set up a range of fun activities for the children to engage in. Encouraging them to work together, and also ignite their competitive spirits.
Here are some great sports day games ideas to get you started…
Egg & Spoon Race
It wouldn’t be sports day without a good old-fashioned egg and spoon race! The clue is in the name, but all you’ll need is an egg and a spoon.
Although if you don’t want to waste your eggs, you could use golf balls instead. Establish a starting line and a finish line, and assign a judge to decide who the winner is, just in case it’s a close race. If you’re wanting to make the event that little bit more difficult, you could incorporate some objects that the children have to weave in and out of!
3-legged Race
Sports day doesn’t have to be every man for himself and to prove that, your children can team up and have a go at a 3-legged race.
All you’ll need is something to tie their legs together, like a scarf or a bit of rope, and they’re good to go! This event is great fun and will require the children to work together and communicate effectively in order to cross the finish line together.
Bean-bag Throwing
Sports day isn’t all about racing. Put your child’s hand-eye coordination to the test by holding a bean-bag throwing contest.
Using an under-arm throw, you can see who can throw the bean bag the furthest. And if you don’t have enough to go around, simply place a marker where the bean bags land.
Take A Break
If you hold your sports day on a hot day, it’s important your child stays hydrated and applies sun-cream to avoid getting burnt.
You could take a break to grab a drink, top up on sun-cream and even have some ice lollies. After all, sports day is a serious event! Even the world’s greatest sporting stars need to take a break, regain some focus and grab some fuel.
Prize Ceremony
To recognise your child’s achievements, you could award everyone prizes at the end of your DIY sports day. You might want to get some stickers prior to the event. Or make some medals.
However, we’re sure that some sweets and chocolate will go down well with your little athletes. There’s no better time to engage in some sporting action, since the Tokyo Olympics are well underway. Plus, your child might be feeling inspired by the incredible efforts of the GB athletes.
If you’re needing some more inspiration on things to do outdoors this summer, there’s plenty of Kiddi Caru activities documented online, to inspire you and your little ones to get active.
Then They’re Back To School
However, life with the kids never lasts long, before you know it they’re going back to school. We don’t have children ourselves so this isn’t something we generally have to think about. However, we know through friends and family that getting them ready to go back can be super stressful. One thing you can do to make life a little easier, and something we do is meal prep. Spend a day getting all of their/and your, meals ready for the next week. One less thing you have to do on the day!
Something like this lunchbox set from Smash Blue (available in Tesco) is perfect! The lunchbox fits perfectly in to the cool bag and the dinosaur design is just adorable! I kinda want to keep it for myself! What’s even better is that the cool bag has been made out of 99% recycled bottles.
PLUS, the inside of the bag as a blue IQ lining. Meaning it helps to protect against harmful bacteria. Smash has such an affordable range of lunch boxes, bags and water bottles that come in a range of colours. Something for everyone!

What are your thoughts on the kids going back to school? Can’t wait to see them go, or sad to see them leave? Also, what were some of your favourite sports day games when you were at school?
