Marriage is very different from the “dating” stage. Dating is exciting as it’s a way for you to keep the flame alive with your partner. It’s the stage where you get to know them inside and out. Their strengths, fears, wishes and goals. At this point, you’re always trying to do fun things together, but after some time, things can get repetitive. I’ve been married now for over 7 years so it takes work and effort to keep the spark going.
Routines are important in our everyday lives, but they shouldn’t be a staple in a couple’s relationship. It’s proven that having a repetitive relationship can lead to breakups more easily in some cases.
When you get married or start to live with your partner, you take on many responsibilities. Doing chores around the house, cooking dinners and lunches, managing your finances. All of these things are repeated on a day to day basis and can often become more of the focus in the relationship. Especially if money is tight, or you have other people to look after.
Here are a few suggestions on how to keep the flame alive with your partner…
Surprise Gifts
Surprising your partner is always a great idea, especially with Valentine’s day just around the corner. Let them know you’re thinking about them.
These gifts don’t have to be expensive at all. Usually, the best gifts are the simpler ones. For example – buying him his favourite chocolate bar or buying her a beautiful bouquet of flowers. Gifts don’t have to be expensive, they just need to show thought.

Intimacy
I don’t mean you have to get super kinky or start watching “those” kinds of videos online! OK, so if you want to go out and buy yourself some “toys” such as dildos, then obviously go ahead! I just mean give yourselves some time with each other to feel intimate again. Keep the flame alive and feel the closeness you once had when it was new and exciting.
Romantic Getaways
OK, so not at the moment but you could start planning a romantic trip together for when this COVID-19 situation has passed!
We can easily get caught up in the mundane day to day life, and this can cause a massive hit on relationships. Especially with the ones we live with – partner, husband…etc
Every couple needs a romantic getaway every once in a while, without cell phones, social media, work calls, or any other thing that could be a distraction. These trips can bring you closer together as you get to spend time closely with your partner, and you’ll remember how you fell in love in the first place.
Touching Can Be Healing
Some couples get so distant that often they forget how to touch each other. A simple holding of the hand, brushing of the face or a warm embrace.
This can be in a sexual environment, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be all the time. Touching your partner in an intimate way – kissing, waking up with some cuddles, hugging in bed. These are all some of the ways you can show deep love to your partner without having to use words to describe it.
Sometimes touch is more important than words in a relationship. It’s important that you express love to one another, even if you feel like you have shown it enough. Sometimes we forget that our partner can’t read our mind.
Also, remember that every person has a way of showing love. Sometimes, you might feel like giving them space is a sign of love, but your partner could think otherwise. This is why it’s so vital for a relationship to have open communication about what they call “love.”
New Hobbies
As we said before, relationships can be repetitive. Trying out new activities and hobbies can take you out of that cycle of routine. Trying out new things like learning a new language, going hiking, learning how to ride a bicycle, making ceramic pots, and many more activities can bring you closer together.
Me-time
As much as spending time together is important, so is your time alone. Some couples spend way too much time together, and it makes them lose themselves in a sense. We’ve all seen those couples that can’t do anything apart. While this is cute, it can do more harm than good in the long run.
It’s essential for each of you, as individuals, to keep doing things you love separate from your partner. For example – I love to spend time in the garden or doing DIY projects. Whereas my husband likes to spend his spare time on his Xbox or watching Youtube videos.
Being in a marriage can change you in so many ways, and sometimes you can get caught up in a routine where you feel stuck. It’s vital for the development of the relationship that you keep things interesting – try new things, surprise your partner, spend some time alone, go on romantic trips, and lots more.
