If you’re anything like me, you’re well and truly over being in lockdown for the billionth time. Days have basically all rolled in to one. With not much to look forward to each morning. Yep, i totally get it. Yes staying at home is helping to stop the spread of the virus and it helps the NHS cope with demand. However, on a more selfish level, i’m so over it! Even hearing about it sets my teeth on edge. It can be hard to keep motivated each day when you know it’s pretty much going to be the same as yesterday. Also, when the lockdown rules seem to change on a daily basis, it can be hard to stay positive. So, how do we get motivated in lockdown and add a little spice to our boring routines?
When Will Lockdown End?
As we have zero control over this, why stress over it?
Lately, i found myself hating going to bed at night, knowing i’d wake up and it be like groundhog day again. What is there to look forward to? We can’t book holidays, see friends and family. Or even look forward to a birthday meal, let alone any kind of party!
If this is you – STOP! What you’re doing is focussing on the lockdown rules. Everything you can’t do, which is always going to make you feel worse. Plus, it’s never going to be good for your mental health either.
Switch Up Your Mindset
Instead, switch up how you’re thinking. Don’t focus on what you can’t do and start thinking about the things you can do. Use this extra time we have all been gifted and start making the most of it. Perhaps you’ve always wanted to learn something new but never had the time to do it before.
Whether that’s learning to do handstands, leaning a new language, doing a huge jigsaw puzzle, watching the entire series of Marvel films in timeline order (we’re currently doing this now). Instead of sitting around waiting for life to happen again. Think of yourself sitting at your desk working, wishing you were doing something else. What is that something you never had time for? Then go and do it!
Plan Of Action
What has really helped me stay more focused and motivated is having a plan. Give yourself a routine and stick with it. Everyday i get up at 6.45am. I walk on the treadmill until i have done my 3k steps. Then i spend 15minutes doing some stretches. I’ve never been a bendy person AT ALL, so figured i could use this time to work on my flexibility. Plus, it’s a great way to get you going for the day. It gets your body moving and the blood pumping. I’ve honestly never felt better since i started doing it.
I then get my breakfast around 8.30am while watching a bit of TV before getting in to my work day. Then around 12pm, i will do a workout of some kind. Whether it’s going for a walk around the block, doing a YouTube workout video or perhaps going for a run. I then have a shower and get some lunch before getting back in to work in the afternoon. As i work from home and my other half still has to work in an office, i get the dinner ready.
Try Something New
One thing i’ve been loving doing is finding new recipes to try each week. It started off as one new recipe a week but found i loved researching new ingredients to try and testing my skills. It’s now turned in to at least 3 or 4 new meals a week. I always thought i hated cooking, however if you plan ahead, plus with all the extra time, it’s really not that stressful.
If you’re quite a stressed person, perhaps you could spend some time doing a bit of yoga each day? I never thought i would be a yoga person myself but it’s actually very relaxing. Plus, once you get in to it, you could easily pass an hour or two learning new moves and techniques.
Be The Healthiest Version Of Yourself
While all these viruses are going around, it makes sense to try to be the healthiest version of yourself. You might eat well and exercise a lot, but perhaps there is something more you could be doing? Perhaps you don’t drink enough water, or don’t give yourself enough pamper days. well, now you have the time to focus more on these aspects of your life that could be better.
Since the lockdown rules started, i now drink almost 1 gallon of water EVERY day. It was hard to begin with as i never drank more than approx 1 litre of water a day. However i stuck with it and now it comes more naturally.
Or, perhaps you don’t eat enough home cooked meals, or eat enough fruits and vegetables. You have the time to plan your meals better now so get researching and planning.
Set Yourself Tasks
If you need to, or think it would help you, set yourself a task to do each day. Whether it’s getting in 10k steps. Hoovering the house. Doing the dusting. Giving yourself a pamper day. Learning a new recipe. Watching an old film. Calling an older relative. Maybe write out a chart for the month so you can tick them off daily.
Switch up how you’re perceiving lockdown rules. Use it as an opportunity. It’s extra time we’ve been given. Don’t waste it wishing away your life. Wishing you could be out with friends, going on lavish holidays…etc. Things will go back to some kind of normal one day. So, until then, do what you can now. Use this time wisely and focus on what you CAN do.
