Even though the vaccine is now in full swing here in the UK, it doesn’t mean we’re all safe. Many of us younger folk are still months away from being given the vaccine as well. As more things are due to start opening up again soon, we thought it might be a great time to share with you a few ways in which you can keep COVID-19 out of your home.
How is COVID-19 spread?
COVID-19 can be spread in a few different ways according to scientists.
- Through contact with someone who has the virus.
- Through contact with surfaces or objects a person with the virus has touched.
- When someone with COVID-19 sneezes or coughs. (Respiratory droplets are released into the air).
These water droplets don’t generally travel too far. It’s said they can travel around 2 meters. The droplets can also linger in the air from just a few minutes, to a few hours. Areas with poor ventilation, or very enclosed spaces can be a lot more dangerous as the droplets become more concentrated.
However, the virus can stay on surfaces for days, depending on the type of material the virus is on. So, how can we make our homes more COVID-19 safe?

Preparing Your Home
Cleaning – You can easily reduce the spread of the virus by keeping on top of your cleaning. Disinfecting frequently touched surfaces. The surfaces below should be cleaned and disinfected on a regular basis…
- Handles
- Tables
- Doorknobs
- Light switches
- Remote controls
- Refrigerator
- Compute keyboards
Improve Ventilation
Open windows when ever possible to improve the ventilation in each room. Make sure you have a good airflow throughout your home. Open a few windows both up and down stairs to ensure air can flow through your home.
Wear Gloves
Before you start cleaning, make sure you’re wearing gloves. Washing up gloves should be fine to do this. Make sure once you’ve finished cleaning, you take the gloves off inside out and put them on a hot wash. Whether you wear gloves on not, make sure you wash your hands thoroughly for at least 20 seconds.
Wash Clothes Often
The virus can live on clothes for around 48 hours. To ensure the virus doesn’t enter your home, if you can, take off your outdoor clothes at the door and put them in the wash.
Deliveries
When you receive a package to your door, either wipe down the package and dispose of immediately. Once you’ve opened the package, wipe down the contents with a bacterial wipe before putting away, and wash your hands.
Wipe Down Common Areas
If you have a gate or a door that people from outside your home uses, make sure you wipe these down on a daily basis. You have no idea how careful other people are being. You can only look after your own, so being a bit over careful could save you from contracting the virus.
