This might seem like an odd article for me to write about seeing as i have been happily married for 7 years and in a relationship for the past 16 years. Online dating wasn’t even a thing when i was single! So, why am i writing an article on how to take the best photos for online dating?
Well, many of my friends are single and use MANY of the online dating apps and websites now available. Match Me Happy being one of these dating website. They allow me to live vicariously through them while they swipe left/right/up/down, to find their match. So, i get to see a lot of the photos active people use on their profiles. OMG, some of these people should not be allowed online ever!
My Tips
So, i figured, as an impartial judge, i thought i might give you some tips on what NOT to use as a profile photo. Especially if you’re seriously tying to find some one, not just in it for a laugh or a quick bit of fun.
On these free dating sites I’ve seen everything from guys (and girls), flexing in the mirror at the gym. To me, this would signify the person is VERY in to their looks, high maintenance and kind of arrogant! I don’t know about you, but i’m not sure that’s the first impression i would want to give some one about me – even if it were true!
Then there are those who try to look overly sexy in their photos. The amount of people in their underwear was ridiculous! Yes OK, so sexy sells. However, would you want the person you might want to settle down with to get the impression you are all about sex?
Not to mention the – look how wasted i am photos! I guess they are trying to say look how fun i can be. However, this just screams – immature, and loves to party. Therefore not someone you’re likely going to settle down with.
A good photo, to me, would be one of the person in their natural environment, looking happy, yet real. Maybe a photo where they didn’t know the photo was being taken – not a fake, staged one though. One where you can clearly see the face. You look nice and have made an effort but it’s the real you. Now that’s the kind of photo i would definitely click on to read more about them. Some one real that you could have a real relationship with.
Oh and definitely in colour as well! Although black and white might look really nice in some photos, it makes it so much harder to get a real feel for what someone looks like. You can hide so much in a black and white photo.
For example, the below photos to me are definitely ones i would click on (if i were a guy/liked women). They all look like real women with a fun side to them, yet also kind, caring and beautiful.
Would you know where to start when learning how to take the best photos for online dating?
