No matter where you live. Be it the nicest neighbourhood in the country or the middle of a dangerous crime zone. There is always the risk that you’ll be targeted by burglars. Common sense will tell you to purchase new locks for your doors and windows. You might also install alarm systems. Noise and motion sensors. However, if you’re looking to save money and are currently unable to protect your home in such ways, there are a few other things you could do to protect your home from burglars in the meantime.
Home Security Systems
You can put up an alarm sign even if you don’t have an alarm in your home! Purchase one online or if you know somebody who’s moving out of their home. Ask if you can take the sign they’ve been using, or get one yourself. This way, you will be able to deter anybody thinking about breaking into your property, as for all they know, your home might be armed with the latest in alarm gadgetry even though it isn’t! Or, instead of an alarm system, you could get some home security cameras instead. Cheaper than an entire system but will still give you some protection.
Get A Dog
Okay, so dogs aren’t necessarily cheap, but they are far less expensive than a state of the art home security systems. They are also a handy deterrent when it comes to burglars, as the sound of your dog’s barking will be enough to scare them away. Just be sure to buy a pet from a noisy dog breed as a dog who can’t be bothered to raise from his slumber will be no good when it comes to home protection. Of course, you might still need to train your dog to stop barking when appropriate (for the sake of your peace and that of your neighbours), so be prepared to put the work in. But if you don’t want to get a dog? Get another sign, preferably one with a vicious looking dog on the front, and stick it to your garden gate!
Leave A Car On The Driveway
If you’re going away on holiday, leave your car on the driveway or ask a family member or neighbour to leave their car on your drive instead. Consider the same when going to work, or when you’re out of your home for any other extended period. Any burglar foolish enough to attempt a break-in in the day will think twice when they see a car in the drive.Plus, they will be less likely to bother at night too.
Ask Your Neighbours For Help
If there are neighbours you can trust (and you’re sure they aren’t potential burglars themselves), ask them for help. As stated above, they could leave their car on your driveway when you’re out of the house. They could also turn lights on and off when you’re away. As well as keeping an eye out for any signs of trouble. Ask them to collect your mail when you’re on holiday too. Unopened post can be a direct giveaway that you’re not home. Your neighbour can act as your home security camera!
Get A Key Safe
We’ve all left a key under a plant pot, or in our ‘safe’ place from time to time. However, this isn’t exactly the safest way to do things. These hiding spots are probably the first place a burglar will look when trying to get in to your home. Instead, invest in a key safe. This one i came across recently (and was so kindly gifted) is not only police approved. It’s also simple to install (you only need a drill and a screwdriver) and said to be as safe as your front door. Plus, if you can’t or don’t want to install it yourself, they even offer this as well.
It can also store up to 6 keys at a time and you can change the passcode whenever you like. It means you can give the passcode to any friends and family that might need to enter your home. Perhaps while you’re on holiday to water plants, or collect your post. At under £60, this one won’t break the bank and could help you no end! You simply choose the passcode you want to use, and lock it in to the device. Having easy access to your house keys has never been more easy.
You should still invest in decent locks and a home security system. However, these inexpensive methods of protecting your home can still do much to negate the risk of a burglary. For more advice, speak to somebody at your local police station.
