Bay windows are a classic Victorian style feature but are very popular in modern homes as well. As a design feature, they are hugely successful. They increase the amount of natural light that enters a room and makes it seem a lot bigger than it actually is. They’ve been around since medieval times but aren’t often found in the newer build homes.
If you’ve just moved into a house that has a bay window, here are some ideas on making your bay window beautiful.
Don’t Pretend They’re Not There!
Unfortunately, many people use the bay as an area to house furniture to free up space in the rest of the room. If you do this you are wasting a style opportunity. Bays should be the focal point of the whole room. If dressed correctly, they could be the ‘wow’ factor of the whole house. Put the TV and all its associated trailing cables in another part of the room.
Seating Space
If you are lacking seating space, think about building window seats in the bay. These can double up as storage areas if you need to pack books and toys away.
Another huge mistake is to fit a curtain rail across the bay so that it is effectively cut off when the curtains are drawn. This completely ruins the feel of the room and wastes this lovely design feature. If you move into a house that has one, take it down immediately!
Dress The Bay For Maximum Effect
Bays come in all shapes and sizes so you will have to pick a design that works best for the window in your home. Some are semi-circular, some are square. Some are flat fronted and others are more angular. It is often the little touches that make the most difference.
In a bay window, it is perfectly acceptable to combine Roman blinds with curtains. You’ll need a Roman blind for each individual bay window. It is best to measure them to hang slightly over the frame of the window as they look best if there are no gaps at the edges of the blinds.
Patterns
Large floral patterns make a great impact and work well with a plain curtain in a toning colour. Roll-up Roman blinds are simple and practical but the bay needs the privacy and warmth provided by the curtains.
You have the option of using one long pole (which can be expensive and tricky to fit) or fitting a separate pole on window. Then you hang one pair of curtains in the middle window and frame each side with another curtain for the ultimate in sophistication.
