There are many forms of exercise out there to stimulate the body, build muscle, shed fat, and help with anxiety. However, one of the best things you can do for all is these is to get out in the garden. Spending time in the garden, nurturing plants and growing vegetables, is one of the most rewarding things you can do. Not to mention it gives your garden some TLC. Whether you’re relaxing in the garden reading a good book and enjoying the sunshine. Or, you’re busy digging up weeds, or planting new seeds to grow your own vegetables. You can even enjoy a visit to your garden centre to get some great gardening tips. Here are a few reasons why you should work on your green thumb this summer, and why I love to garden.
Indoor Gardening
Yes, we said it, gardening isn’t all about being outside. Perhaps you only have a ver small garden or no garden at all…thats ok, you don’t need outside space to have green fingers. There are so many different was you can bring the outside in.
You’ve got the regular plant pots. The plant pots on legs to really showcase your plants. The miniature pots to put your cactus’ in. Hanging baskets for the beautiful plants that drape down like flowing rivers of greenery. Or the smaller wall pots which are great for housing air plants. What’s great about air plants is they need NO maintaining at all! They live off the air around them so as long as they get some fresh air and a little sunlight, that’s pretty much all they need. Thee vessels come in a smaller pack of two or you can get one in a much bigger size. The pack of two is £21.60 which is a great price for such a fab little gem.
Better View
Stand on your patio and take a look at your garden. Is it something that you’d be happy to stare at while sipping a cold drink in the summer, or does it look like permanent winter? When people think about hosting a BBQ in the summer, they might decide to visit Bridgman today to get an idea of the garden furniture they might need, but they won’t pay much attention to the garden beyond mowing the grass. You don’t need to have a garden straight from the cover of a magazine, but a few new flowers or the beginnings of a tomato plant might make your garden look more alive, and it makes excellent talking points at your BBQ.

Money Saving
While you might not grow enough to make your family self-sufficient, you can still save a few pennies here and there by growing your favourite vegetables. Gardening is also a fun family activity that doesn’t cost a fortune. In fact, your kids are more likely to eat vegetables if they’ve helped to grow them. Families with young babies can especially benefit from having a garden. Organic baby food is expensive, so this way you have something healthy ready to puree. Plus, you get to pass on your gardening tips to your family as they learn.
Physically Demanding
Gardening is not as simple as planting some seeds and hoping the weather conditions will grow your vegetables for you. It takes a lot of physical labour to produce good and edible food, from raking to weeding, and digging up the vegetables when they’re ready for harvesting. Without even realising it, you will lose weight, develop muscle tone, and get physically stronger.
Not to mention the benefits of getting some fresh air on a regular basis. Plus, when you are done working your green thumb, you can give yourself a well deserved break, whether that’s on your gorgeous garden bench, on a super comfy deck chair or hammock…whatever your preference is, take the time out for you to relax and unwind surrounded by nature. This is the bench we have and it’s super comfortable, especially when you add a squishy pillow and for only £149 in the sale it was a total bargain!!
Mental Health Benefits
Gardening is proven to reduce stress, create a sense of relaxation and build self-esteem. In fact, gardening ticks so many boxes for mental health; you get fresh air, you have a task that requires focus, you spend time away from your daily stresses and away from digital devices and the glare on screens, you can express your creativity and you’ll feel a sense of accomplishment when you’re literally putting food on the table.
Rewarding
There’s nothing more satisfying than seeing months of hard work pay off. Whether it comes in the form of delicious, home grown produce, or in seeing the first flowers bloom in your flowerbed.
