You might think Botox injections are all about vanity, making yourself look as young as possible for as long as possible. Getting rid of all the frown lines until you have no facial expressions left. However, Botox is so much more than just a cosmetic treatment for the appearance of wrinkles. For example, did you know Botox can also be used for issues such as neck pain, to help with chronic migraines, and even aid in bladder control? If any of these relate to you, then Botox could be a very effective treatment for you too.
While this isn’t a solution for everyone, it could be a viable treatment option for some as medical treatments. Of course, it has advantages and disadvantages, so do your research before diving right in. So, what are the pros and cons of botox?
Botox Injections
As you might have heard, Botox injections (or botulinum toxin injections) have become the biggest craze over the last few years. Whether for issues such as reducing facial wrinkles to create a more youthful appearance, to aiding urinary incontinence.
Did you know that the drug used to administer Botox was originally made for calming twitchy eye muscles – and still does. As an added bonus, though, it was also found to help reduce the wrinkles around the eye known as crow’s feet.
Thinking About Botox Treatments?
If you’ve been thinking about Botox and are still curious about its advantages and disadvantages, there are many people like you. Some people don’t take the time to be informed and end up regretting they had the non-surgical procedures done.
However, others love it so much; that they have it done on a regular basis, no matter the monetary cost, or the potential side effects of botox.
The Botox Pro’s…
Botox For Chronic Migraines
Did you know, that Botox can be administered to relieve migraine headache pain? An FDA doctor has reported the ability of Botox to prevent chronic migraine in adults with repeat treatments. Britain was actually one of the first to approve the use of Botox for migraines.
Many of the people that got the treatment reported a reduction in migraine incidence almost instantly. However, to be effective, patients must receive over thirty injections in areas around the head, the neck and the face within a 3 month period. If any of these are missed, it’s likely they won’t experience the full result of the treatment.
Botox For Overactive Bladder Control
Who would think that for people with an overactive bladder, Botox is said to be able to control it? When Botox is injected into the bladder, it increases the volume of the bladder and reduces the urgency to urinate. The treatment, when given last for several months, but it depends on the amount of drug administered.
Although botox is known to be great when it comes to controlling an overactive bladder, there are also some negative possible side effects to consider before you go ahead.
- Urinary tract infection
- Painful or difficult urination
- Temporary inability to empty your bladder
- General fatigue
However, research shows there is approximately a 70-80% effective outcome when having botox for an overactive bladder and not everyone gets any of the above symptoms.
Botox For Pain
Pain is not a pleasant experience. Who on earth would want to keep their pain when there is something available to ease the pain? You know the answer to that question. No one would. Studies have indicated that Botox can help to ease pain in the knee, shoulder and hip.
Botox is able to block body signals that cause muscle contraction, thereby alleviating pain.
Relax Eye Muscles
If your eyes are crossed, you experience blurred vision or spasms of the eyelid, Botox could be your next best friend. There is a lot to cover as it relates to your eye muscles, but this brief article won’t do it justice. Let’s say that Botox can provide a welcome relaxation to your eye muscles.
Diminish Excessive Sweating
If you have trouble with excessive sweating, you can fight this with Botox. In fact, with the injection, you can avoid excessive perspiration for up to two years. You don’t want to be in an interview or in a social setting with a wet armpit, do you? Didn’t think so!
The Botox Con’s…
Now, let’s look at the cons of Botox, including the possible serious side effects. Which one will outweigh the other?
Before you go ahead and have this cosmetic procedure, do your research. Make sure you’ll be getting this botox procedure done by medical professionals who really know what they’re doing. Ask lots of questions on your initial consultation and don’t have anything done on your first visit. Anyone who tries to rush you through it isn’t someone you want sticking needles in you!
Spending Too Much Money
Like any other treatment that requires consistency, Botox will have you spending more money than your budget can possibly keep up with. You may think you’re only going to be going in for one treatment, however, once you’ve had it done once, it’s likely you will need to keep this going. The botox results can wear off quickly and make you look worse in the long run. So, take that into consideration as you may be paying for this treatment for years to come once you start.
Unless you need it for health reasons, there is such a thing as too much botox. Plus, spending more money doesn’t always mean better when it comes to your cosmetic issues!
Rebellious Wrinkles
Botox is no different from other drugs that cause severe side effects. Botox can be wonderful in improving self-confidence. However, botox doesn’t always do justice to every type of stress wrinkle.
It freezes wrinkles to reduce those fine lines, which can give you a surprised look that you’re unable to get rid of until it’s worn off. Be prepared for this, and to look and feel different, especially after your first time.
It’s also likely you might have some pain or swelling for the first 2-7 days around the injection site. If you have this, try holding a cold flannel over the area to help reduce the swelling around the treatment area.
Funky Mood
One of the most common side effects of botox is a feeling of depression or panic attacks, however, this should slowly go away after a few days. In the rare cases it doesn’t, make sure you speak with your botox cosmetic professional.
Losing Muscle Sensation
It has recently been revealed that losing muscle sensation and control from a Botox treatment is another side effect due to the results of botox. Again, this will generally come back with time. However, this isn’t 100% guaranteed and could leave you with droopy eyelids, general muscle weakness around the injection sight, or even damaged nerve endings.
Stiff Face
Our facial expression is important in telling others what we’re thinking and feeling. One negative side effect of botox is that it has a reputation for giving you a stiff face, meaning expressions are harder to create. Those motion wrinkles experience paralysis upon Botox injections.
There’s No Coming Back!
Keep in mind that with botox procedures, there is no coming back. Once you have had the treatment done, you cannot reverse it. In time the small amounts of botox might start to subside, however, you may not go back to your original shape or look.
Knowing the pros and cons of botox, personally, unless it was for a medical reason I wouldn’t go near this type of procedure!
The thought of having all those chemicals in your body can’t be good for you. Grow old gracefully and let nature do what it’s meant to do. If you start to sag and get wrinkles, own them! Don’t shy away from them.
