For some people, the change in the new season also sees some changes in the appearance of their skin. The colder weather can cause more than just rosy cheeks and fighting off that dehydrated looking complexion can sometimes prove a hard task. Finding that fine balance is a priority for people looking to keep skin looking glowing and healthy throughout a cold snap. So take a look at these top tips for healthy and glowing skin this winter. Help keep dry skin at bay.
Keep Hydrated
It may seem like an obvious one but staying hydrated during the winter months will help with your overall health and in turn your skin. Sometimes fluid intake during the colder months is more difficult as we turn to hotter beverages such as coffee or hot chocolate. Try to keep these winter warmers as a treat and increase your water intake during the festive season to help your feel fuller for longer.

Change Your Moisturiser
As the seasons change, so do our skincare needs. You may find during the spring and summer months that your moisturiser needs to be light and able to handle excess sweat and hotter conditions (yep, even in the UK). For the Winter however, changing your skincare to accommodate drier skin is a must. My go to moisturisers in the Winter months are always thicker, more like body butters than creams. Take a look at oil-based moisturisers as these create a protective layer on your skin, which helps to retain moisture.

Top Tip…
Take a look at night cream products as these generally contain oil bases and don’t have to be used solely for nighttime skincare. Also indulge in a deep moisturising balm at night too on very dry areas such as feet, elbows and knees to give them an intensive hydrating treat.
Keeping Cold Sores At Bay
Colder weather can trigger skin conditions such as cold sores. Dry, flaky skin and lips can make outbreaks very sore and uncomfortable but there are a few ways to help you steer clear of them during the winter. Maintaining a healthy and balanced diet with plenty of fluids, not only aids skin conditions; it helps control other triggers such as fatigue and stress.
Also be sure to dress for winter, wrap up with scarves and coats and try to keep your face shielded from cold winds and bright sunlight. Resources such as Cold Sores Cured also offer handy tips on keeping cold sores at bay.
Always Wear Sunscreen
Sunscreen isn’t just for the summer sunshine. Winter sun, especially if you are jetting off for ski season, can certainly damage your skin. Applying a layer of broad-spectrum sunscreen to exposed areas such as your hands and face, will help keep you protected against harmful rays throughout the year.
Look After Your Hands
Our hands are often neglected but due to them having thinner skin than the rest of your body, you may start to notice dry patches and cracking more prominently. Sore and cracked hands are uncomfortable and an easy way to keep them soft and supple is by wearing gloves when braving the elements. Try to wash your hands in lukewarm water, as the extremes in freezing cold or boiling hot temperatures will cause further dehydration. Be sure to keep them moisturised too with a specialist hand cream.
One new hand moisturiser that I have been trying lately is the Nourishing Hand & Nail Oil from Bodyenrich. I wouldn’t normally go for a hand oil as my skin does seem to get quite oily anyway but I love to use this at night as it has the whole night to sea in and really nourish my hands before washing them many, many times throughout the day, washing off all the natural moisture. The 15ml bottle is £8.99 which is such a good price and it’s combination of Baobab Seed, Calendula, Papaya Seed, Pumpkin Seed and Vitamin E oils moisturises, softens and condition my hands so they are much less dry and flaky in the morning. I suffer so badly with my hands in the Winter months and this really is helping with that.
Beauty Salons & Treatments
OK, so most treatments you can do yourself at home but it is considered to be a good idea to go to a beauty salon once a month or whatever you can afford to get a really good, deep cleansing facial when you can as this will really help to keep your skin looking healthy and hydrated. If you already go to a beauty salon then great, however if you don’t, don’t worry there are so many to choose from. You don’t want to be travelling for ages to get to a salon so we advise you choose something close to home with good reviews.

Don’t Be Tempted By A Hot Bath
It may seem like the perfect solution when you are feeling the cold but sliding yourself into a steaming hot bath can actually have a drying effect on your precious skin.
A super hot bath or shower can break down the lipid barriers in your skin and cause loss of moisture leading to a drier, flakier complexion. That’s not to say avoid baths altogether but try lukewarm water with specialist moisturising products rather than bubbles with harsh chemicals.
Remember To Exfoliate
Cleansing and moisturising are a regular part of a skin care routine but exfoliating can sometimes be missed altogether. Gently removing dead skin cells gives your skin the best chance to soak up as many nutrients as possible, leaving you with a smoother complexion.
For people looking for an easy skincare solution, try using exfoliating body wash to combine both cleansing and exfoliating in one.
Be Gentle To Sensitive Skin
In the winter, skin can become more sensitive to everyday things such as certain fabrics or washing detergents. Chemical laden washing powders and irritating fabrics such as wool might seem cosy but can cause discomfort and itchy skin.
To avoid any irritation, try using washing powders and softeners designed for sensitive skin. Also, if you know you are prone to sensitivity with certain fabrics, do a touch test first before putting your skin through any discomfort.

Facial Aesthetics
If none of these options quite do it for you, perhaps you’re looking for something a bit more drastic, then don’t worry we have some tips for you too. Firstly, make sure it’s something you have really thought about, researched and spoken to family and friends about as these changes are much harder to reverse! One place you could go to get some great advice is actually your dentist when it comes to getting facial aesthetics.
If you think about it, it makes complete sense that dentists should be a great resource for advice and even possibly to do the procedure for you as they have undergone extensive training focusing on the facial area. Another positive of using your dentist is you probably already have a good relationship with them and some one you trust to do the work for you.
