As you’ve gotten older, have you found you’ve become less of an energetic person?
Here are a few signs to look out for that may indicate you’re lacking in energy…
- Getting up off the sofa takes more effort
- Grunting when putting on socks in the morning
- Everything seems like an effort
- You have a short temper when hungry
- Yawning more than you used to
Any of the above ringing any bells? I figured my energy levels would naturally start to plummet with age so accepted this is just how it was.

However, after lockdown hit us my energy levels began to rise, so I decided I didn’t want to give in to it. Plus this surely meant it couldn’t all be down to age so, I went on the hunt for natural ways to feel more energised.
Here are some of the best ways to become a more energetic person…
Avoid Over Sleeping
Once you’ve got your 7-8 hours of sleep a night, sleeping more can actually make you feel even worse. Your body doesn’t need more sleep than this – unless you’re ill, etc. Oversleeping will dramatically lower your energy levels meaning you’ll likely fall asleep more easily throughout the day.

The best thing you can do when it comes to sleep is to have a routine like you did when you were a child. Try to go to bed at the same time each night and wake up at the same time each day.
Have you noticed at the weekends when you sleep in, you generally feel more sluggish throughout the day? Figure out a time that works for you and stick to that time as closely as possible. You’ll find the more you do this, the easier it will become. Read more about it on the sleep foundation website.
Eat a Healthy Diet
Your body is a temple! Imagine your body is a car. If you put diesel into a petrol car, it’s not going to run smoothly, if at all. You need to give your body the right fuel for it to work properly.
If you only feed it junk food, it’s never going to run optimally. You don’t have to only eat cabbage and lettuce and drink water. Fuelling yourself properly is a great way of boosting your energy and reducing fatigue.

However, fuelling yourself with a well-balanced diet will make all the difference. If you can, swap quick energy fixes with slow-releasing foods. Swap bread for sweet potatoes. Chocolate bars for a handful of nuts or fruit.
Towards the end of 2020, I decided to try going vegan and only eating nutritious home-cooked foods. Meals filled with fresh fruits and vegetables. I always assumed eating only fruits and vegetables would be mundane and boring.
However, there’s so much variety, you just have to go looking for inspiration. I recently bought myself a cold press juicer and religiously have a homemade juice each morning which I love!

Be More Active
Exercising regularly, whether it’s a quick walk around the block, or going for a 20-mile run can lead to you becoming a more energetic person. Get up and get those endorphins flowing, you’ll feel so much better for doing so. On average, you should be aiming for 10k steps a day which isn’t too hard to do if you’re not slouched on the sofa all day!
However, if you’ve just started going to the gym and are finding your energy levels are dropping, stick with it. It normally takes around 1-2 weeks for your body to adjust.

Try doing your 10k steps every day, then every other day doing something a little more intense as well. Perhaps you could go for a bike ride, a run around the block, or even do a home workout video. Something that will get your heart rate up and give you a bit of a sweat.
The Power Of Your Mind
Some people might think this one is a bit silly but don’t knock it until you’ve really given it a go. If you start to feel drained of energy, tell yourself you’re not tired. The mind can be a VERY powerful thing, so use it!
