When I was younger, i spent most of my time outside, playing in the mud and enjoying nature. Spending any time or money on fancy personal care products never even entered my mind. That was until i started going to college (aged 20-ish) when i began to take note of all the products my female friends would talk about. It was also around this time i got my first job so had my own money to spend on products like this. All of which were full of chemicals i had no idea about back then (over 20 years ago now). These days, i’m much more careful when buying skincare products – but generally create my own natural homemade body wash recipe.
A simple homemade natural body wash recipe containing ONLY natural ingredients that will benefit your skin inside & out – Non Toxic Skincare.
Why Use A Natural Body Wash?
There are so many benefits of using a natural homemade body wash like this.
Firstly, this natural body wash recipe is so simple to make and will be ready in under 10 minutes. It’s also a recipe you can change to make your own, or to suit your mood. For example, add lavender or ylang ylang essential oil for a relaxing scent or, peppermint or grapefruit for a burst of energy.

It’s also much cheaper than buying it from the shops. However, you will need to buy the ingredients which is a bit expensive, although these ingredients should last you for years – if not longer!
Unlike store-bought skincare products with god knows what in them, a homemade body wash doesn’t contain chemicals or artificial fragrances – unless you add them in yourself. You know exactly what ingredients are going on to your skin.
One thing to note with this recipe is that it will be a natural preservative-free body wash. This means your hydrating body wash won’t last as long as store-bought ones. However that’s fine, make in smaller batches and use as and when you need it. Fresh is best after all.
Natural DIY Body Wash Ingredients
A great thing about making your own DIY body was his natural body is that you decide what goes in it. The basic recipe is the same – honey, oil, essential oils and castille soap. However, you can mix and match these pretty much as you wish to.
Raw Honey
Honey is a great skincare ingredient as it’s soothing and anti-bacterial. However, did you know honey is also excellent for wound healing – especially if you use Manuka Honey.
If possible, you should try to use local, raw honey. However, if I can’t find any honey locally, just make sure it’s organic raw honey.
Natural Carrier Oils
Natural carrier oils are great cleansers and hydrators for our skin. In this recipe the natural oil i used was castor oil, however you can swap it out for a natural oil of your choice.
Using oils like the ones listed below will add an extra level of hydration to your skin when cleansing. Another reason why we use natural oils in recipes like this is because they help to carry the essential oils. This simply means the essential oils don’t just sit on the surface of your body wash, they can blend more easily.
Some of the best carrier oils include…
- Castor Oil – Penetrates deeper than any other oil
- Sweet Almond Oil – Budget friendly
- Jojoba Oil – Has anti-ageing properties
- Hemp Seed Oil
- Avocado Oil – Hydrating
- Coconut Oil (fractionated) – Hydrating
- Olive Oil – Rich in anti-oxidants
NOTE – If you decide to use coconut oil in your recipe, make sure it’s fractionated coconut oil. This simply means it stays in liquid form, whereas coconut oil that isn’t fractionated will go hard when cold.
Liquid Castille Soap
Castille soap is the ingredient you need to actually cleanse your body and give it some foamy-ness. You can either use a plain castille soap as your base to add scents to.
Or, you can go the more expensive route and get something like the Dr. Bronner’s castille soap which comes in a variety of scents (keep this in mind when it comes to deciding what scent you might want to use in your homemade bodywash recipe).
Pure Essential Oils
Pure essential oils are the best way to scent your body wash recipe naturally. There are so many different combinations of scents you could use depending on your preference, needs and even your mood.
For example, you could use lavender and ylang ylang if you wanted a calming scent. Or perhaps grapefruit and ginger for a zingy, uplifting fragrance. Peppermint essential oil is a great option for an invigorating body wash – just make sure you go careful in the more sensitive areas! You could even make Christmas versions to give to friends and family as Xmas gifts! change up the oils you use seasonally or based on the holidays.
However, when it comes to essential oils, make sure you buy organic where possible, and ensure they are 100% pure essential oils. If it says fragrance oil, or blend anywhere, it’s likely not going to be a pure essential oil. Also, if the price seems to good to be true – then it is! Essential oils are expensive because they are so concentrated. Persoanlly, i use either Tisserand essential oils, or Doterra (although this brand is VERY expensive).
A Glass Pump Bottle
Essential oils don’t store well at all in plastic containers as they can react with the plastic, so make sure you keep your homemade body wash in a glass bottle – preferably a brown glass one if you can get one.
You can either use a standard glass bottle with a pump so your body wash comes out in a liquid form. Or, if you want to make it a bit more fun, use a foaming pump so your homemade body wash comes out all foamy and creamy instead.
Shelf life: This recipe should last you a good 6-8 months, possibly even longer as all the ingredients are shelf stable.
