I’m a very firm believer in our entire beings being connected. Our physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health are what makes up “us” and without one, the rest fall out of balance. Falling out of balance in this way is very normal as there will always be periods in our lives where one takes priority over the other. You might be going through a period of grief, whereby your emotional health is struggling. Whereas your spiritual health might be stronger than ever. Or perhaps you have an injury that stopped you from exercising for a while. Your physical health might have taken a beating but you might be feeling very mentally strong. So, how do you get the perfect balance between your physical & mental health?
Working on these different areas is a lot and takes a practice to find rituals, routines and habits to suit your lifestyle. However, the more you do it, the more you’ll begin to notice when something feels out of balance.
In this post, we’re going to be looking at the physical and mental connections. These two areas are intrinsically linked. Endorphins released by exercise are good for your physical and mental health. So on a scientific level, combining these two is actually a really smart thing to do.
Yoga
Yoga is one of the most wonderful practices to combine both physical and mental health and gain benefits from both simultaneously. I’ve been practicing Yoga for a number of years now and I’ve found such a close link between physical and mental health when I practice.
Rolling out the mat on a daily basis is a huge act of self care. Taking the time for yourself, to breathe and be in the moment can have a monumentally positive impact on your mental health. Not to mention the incredible physical benefits of a swift Yoga flow too!
Working Out To Your Favourite Playlist
I’m certainly not the only one to feel a huge connection between music and mental health. Music can have such a profound impact on our mood! So for that reason, working out, going for a run or simply having a private dance party to your favourite music is a fantastic way to boost your physical and mental health simultaneously!
Cooking From Scratch
Cooking can be a great way to tend to your physical and mental health, and is often seen a very relaxing and therapeutic activity. Spending time alone with your thoughts can be great. However, you could also do the opposite and use an activity such as this to focus your attention elsewhere. Plus, you also get a nice healthy meal, or a homemade treat at the end of it.
Going For Walks
Walking is SO good for you! It’s such a gentle but beneficial way to stay fitter and healthier and walking also allows you to do other things too. Going for walks in nature for example is a great way to tend to your mental health as well. Nature has an incredible positive effect on mental well-being.
But you might also want to listen to an uplifting podcast, your favourite music or go for a walk with a friend, which are also all great ways to combine physical and mental well-being.
Massage
With all of us slouched over our phones, laptops, children, gaming stations, desks and more all day every day, it’s no surprise so many people suffer with back pain, tight shoulders or neck ache on a daily basis.
So massage is a wonderful way to combine the two areas of wellness. We all need someone to work on our muscles every now and again and combined with the oils and music of a massage session, it’s super relaxing too.
Reflexology
Reflexology is a type of massage that involves applying different amounts of pressure to the feet (and sometimes hands and ears). It’s believed that these points are connected to different parts of the body.
Trained reflexologists are able to pick up subtle blockages that correlate to specific parts of the body. However, reflexology is also SUPER relaxing – so definitely beneficial for your mental health as well.
Wellness certainly doesn’t have to mean pushing yourself to the limits every day. But tending to the mind and body and one has huge benefits in the long term!
Which activities do you like to take part in which combine tending to your physical and mental health?
