Many people like to have a long summer break, perhaps a family vacation or couples retreat. Yet budgets, the cost of living, and time, in general, can sometimes get in the way of those perfect summer holidays. That means having the best holiday possible when you do go is essential to ensure you make the most of the summer vacation benefits – both mentally and physically.

If you’ve saved up for years, then you’ll want to do whatever it takes to ensure you have a holiday to remember for all the right reasons. Especially seeing as the summer of 2022 is likely to be the first holiday many of us will have had in over 3 years!
With that in mind, here are some of the things to consider for your mental health if you want to have a better holiday and reap the summer holiday benefits.
Have The Right Perspective
You might not realise it, but having a good family holiday is all about having the right mindset. You need to ensure you’re going to be looking forward to this long break. Not worrying about anything that could, or might go wrong. When you can be more positive and have a good outlook, you’ll be able to enjoy yourself a lot more and make the most of your quality time away from home.

Plan Ahead
It all begins with the planning phase of your time off work, or break from school. Perhaps you’re looking to book a family-friendly hotel for your annual vacation during the school holidays. Or you want to book a romantic trip away to Gran Canaria. Wherever it is you want to go, if you plan your holiday well and don’t rush any of the details, you’ll get a lot more of it, and be less likely to make any costly mistakes.

For example, if you’re flying somewhere abroad, as part of a package holiday perhaps, make sure you know all the flight details. What time you need to get to the airport, and how you’re getting there too, whether you need to book a hotel before your flight…etc. Or making sure your holiday is protected by the ATOL scheme in case anything out of your control does happen.

However, if you’re staying closer to home because you’ve opted to explore Cornwall holidays or city breaks in your country, you’ll need to think about the best time to leave. Whether this is to catch your train or to start your long drive. Also, don’t forget to factor in any rest stops you might need to do – especially essential if you have young children.
It’s not just getting to your destination that you’ll need to think about if you want to have a positive mindset. You’ll need to think about work, too, albeit before you leave. That means you’ll need to make sure that everything is in place so that you can relax on your holiday.
Out Of Office
Make sure someone is covering your shifts, that you’ve told any clients you’ll be away, and so on. Whether you work for yourself or someone else, planning for when you’re away on holiday is crucial if you want to be able to truly shut off from work.

Depending on your circumstances, these are all things to take into consideration if you want to be able to relax while you’re on your all-inclusive holiday. Thought about it in advance so that you can go away with the most positive mindset possible. The happier you are to go on holiday, the more fun you’ll have.

Have A Social Media Detox
Many of us are addicted to social media without even really knowing it. How often do you log onto Facebook or Instagram during the day, even when you’re meant to be doing other things? How long do you spend scrolling through the feed, reading the same posts, and looking at the same images each time because nothing has changed?
Perhaps you even do it without thinking, only to realise that you’ve opened your Twitter app again and you’ve wasted 2 hours doing nothing. If this is the case, your holiday is the perfect time to unplug and have some family time – literally in some cases – and start a social media detox.

By leaving your screens to one side and not thinking about social media while you’re away, you can have a much better time. When you’re not constantly searching for the best angle to take a photo of your dinner, and instead you focus on eating it and enjoying it, you’ll have a much better time.
The same is true of anything you do; don’t do things through the lens of social media and what would make a great post. Do things because they’re fun, and allow yourself to be in the moment.
If you can detox from social media while you’re away, not only will you have more fun and actually make more memories, but you’ll also want to use these platforms less when you get home, making the trip an even more useful one.
Have A Schedule
We’ve already talked about planning your holiday in advance in terms of the journey and making sure you’re ready to go so you can relax, but what about planning the holiday itself? It might seem as though this would be the last thing you want to do because it doesn’t sound very relaxing.
Plus, planning everything you do on holiday ahead of time isn’t being very spontaneous. However, in reality, planning – at least in part – can certainly make your holiday better, even if you only plan to lie around the pool.
You don’t have to book everything in advance, and you don’t have to plan out every hour of every day. However, having at least an idea of what you might want to do and when you could do it would be useful. That way, you can be sure you’re not going to miss out on anything you want to do while you’re away.

For example, if travelling with children, you might want to have a day off to do an excursion, so booking them into a kids club could be ideal to do ahead of time.
Check with anyone else you’re travelling with to see what they want to do and try to come up with a schedule that suits everyone. You don’t have to stick to the schedule completely because situations often change, and maybe even the weather will have a say in what you can do, so having a flexible plan is also important.
