With so much time to kill throughout lockdown, many of us have developed some green fingers. Sales of gardening products were found to have increased by 34% in June alone. This new found popular hobby as left a lot of the country with their very own thriving vegetable patches. A garden that wouldn’t look amiss at the Chelsea Flower Show.
In the spring and summer months, a keen gardener can sit back and admire their work in full bloom. However, now the colder months are well on their way, that once luscious green garden is going to start looking brown and overgrown. Also, with the weather on the turn, gone are the days where every weekend is an opportunity to tidy things up a bit.
To avoid letting your garden slip in the winter months, there are a number of things you can do before the first frost comes rolling in. Make sure it stays as neat and tidy as possible. Not only can you create a blank canvas for next spring. You can also enjoy looking out onto a perfect yard as it gets blanketed in snow.
So, what exactly can you do maintain your garden’s up-keep through the winter?
Pull Up Any Summer/Spring Plants
Be sure to clear your flower beds of dead flowers and anything that bloomed during the warmer months. This will not only prevent you having heaps of dead shrubbery on your hands. For some species, it will contribute to healthy regrowth in the spring.
Get Rid Of Weeds
Weeds are known to grown under any condition. When left to take over, they can leave your garden looking very untidy. Not to mention they will cover and infiltrate some of the other plants and seeds you planted in the spring. Get in the garden for a bit of weeding before the chill hits to ensure you stop them in their tracks. It’ll leave your garden tidy for winter and give any other surviving plants rooms to grow.
You could consider investing in a quality weed killer. However, if you can, make sure it’s a natural one without any toxic chemicals.
Tidy Up Lawns And Edges
During the spring and summer, the mixture of sunshine and rain is the perfect blend to ensure your garden thrives. This can be easily maintained during the warmer months. However, the colder it gets, the less we want to be heading outside with the lawn mower. So, to keep things nice and tidy, be sure to give your garden a little trim before winter gets in full swing.
Be sure to make use of your lawn mower, and perhaps a battery powered cordless strimmer, so you can easily give your edges a good trim and get to those hard to reach nook and cranny’s.
Plant Winter Seeds
The winter months don’t always mean death and decay for your garden. There are many plants and vegetables that you can sow in the autumn that will leave your garden thriving during the cold. Things like garlic, peas, onions and lamb’s lettuce all can be planted now and survive throughout the winter.
Are you prepared to hang up your gardening gloves for winter? If you’re lockdown green fingers are still very much prevalent, but sure to do what you can to maintain your garden whilst you wait for spring to roll around once more. You never know, you might end up giving those at the Chelsea flower show a run for their money!
