In many ways, sustainability can be applied to our lives. There are more routes to sustainability than we may first envision. As well as many practices we can neatly embed into our routine so that we follow this necessary protocol as well as possible. That said, sometimes sustainability cannot be followed, and it’s important to know what to do in that case, also.
For instance, using professional car wreckers can help ensure your vehicle and its materials are taken out of circulation. It can then be recycled, or at least be handled in a safe manner. While reselling could be an option, sometimes it’s best to write off a car that has limited value now. How sustainable is your car?
There are many other forms of ethical disposal that can help us limit our general wastage. While also knowing our possessions, belongings or debris are maturely handled and cared for. In this post, we’ll discuss a few of them, and how to integrate that practice into your life planning. Without further ado, let’s get started.
Professional Waste Services
Professional waste services can make a massive difference in terms of how you store and rid yourself of debris. For instance, home renovation can often bring with it much damage and need for the removal of old building materials. Hiring a skip service can be essential. It may also be that having the wood picked up by a recycling service can aid you. In addition, sometimes pest control services may be utilised to help a home remove pesky inhabitants in a humane manner. Such as using methods for bats to leave your attic instead of putting them in harms way. It’s always worth verifying the ethical process before hiring a given service, for obvious reasons.
I’ve often seen people going around in their vans collecting old washing machines, dishwashers, and even random pieces of metal. All to be taken away to either be used for scraps, or recycled to be made in to something else. Generally these people will take it all away for free so you, and will come to you. It makes it so easy to get rid of these awkward pieces of what could be left in landfill sites otherwise.
Reselling & Upcycling
Reselling and upcycling is a great way of making sure your property finds a new home. In the case of reselling, that benefits are obvious. Maybe that your old monitor you thought no one would want could be purchased by someone looking for a cheap replacement. It’s always worth a try, as there are generally people out there looking for a bargain! Upcycling means restoring the functionality of a given item to give it a use one more, be that sanding down and revarnishing a table, or finding an external use for an interior item.
Personally, i love the idea of upcycling old items that no longer have a use. Perhaps you have an old wooden pallet in your garage gathering dust. Look through some Pinterest images to see what you could make it in to. Or, maybe you have an old arm chair with torn fabric. Something as simple as a new upholster could have it looking like new again. OK, this one might not be as simple as the wooden pallet, but there are many videos out there to help you.
The amount of times i have washed out an old jam jar, sprayed it with paint and reused it for something else is crazy! Plus, if you have quite a nice looking glass jar, you could make it in to a sweetie gift jar. Tie a bit of ribbon around it, or paint it with chalk paint, there you have a new gift for someone to enjoy.
Charity
Of course, perhaps the most ethical disposal source is that of charity. Giving items to charity may mean someone else can purchase and enjoy them. While also raising money for a charity, and giving you some pocket money. There are even apps these days like Depop, eBay and Vinted where you can sell your old clothes online. You could save up this money and donate it to a charity of your choice. No matter how big or small the amount, every little helps these fantastic charities.
When i had a huge declutter a while back, i managed to give 7 bin bags of old clothes and books to my local charity shop. It felt so great to give these bits to charity. For some one else to be able to use and love them, plus helping out a charity at the same time.
With this advice, you’re sure to find a better way to ethically dispose of something you no longer need. How would you bring sustainability in to your life?
