Life can get busy and chaotic at times, and everything can feel – go go go. Between working, raising kids, looking after pets, running a household and trying to have a social life. Chances are you don’t ever get much time to put your feet up and relax. While this isn’t ideal on a practical level, it’s actually also very bad for your mental health. Ongoing stress, even at low levels can lead to burnout. You’ll start feeling exhausted, deflated and your physical health can suffer too. Improve your mental health at home to avoid more serious health issues.
In the short term, this can mean things like colds and common infections are picked up more easily. In the long term, it can lead to high blood pressure, insomnia, heart issues and much more. Making time to relax is crucial to live a happy and healthy life. Having a home that makes relaxing easy is one of the best ways to go about it. Put your feet up and allow yourself to fully unwind.
The Lounge
The lounge is a family space, perfect for relaxing with household members during the evenings and weekends. It’s a place where you can host movie or game nights with friends, or just relax and watch tv with the family. The first step to making this a pleasant place to sit is investing in a good furniture suite. You could go with a large corner sofa, a sofa and a couple of chairs, two sofas- whatever works with your setup.
There should be a proper seat for everyone in the family without having to squash up, so if your current suite isn’t up to scratch then this is a good place to spend money. Go with quality as it will last you for years to come, and if you choose a fairly plain and neutral design and colour it will work with any decor changes over the years.
Entertainment
The next thing to get right is your entertainment system. A nice big screen tv with a surround sound system or a sound bar will make everything you watch as good as it can be. You can get 4k tvs now which offer superior resolution, as well as curved models- plus tvs are getting bigger than ever. While there are some very pricey varieties out there, if you’re due an upgrade you’ll probably find you can snag a good mid range one for a few hundred which is still an incredible standard. You then need a good package which allows you to watch quality content.
You could get eir Sport for broadband customers for free when you sign up, or you could find a package that includes movies, music, kids tv, whatever it is your family like to watch. That way you can get home, jump onto your big comfy sofa and relax while watching all your favourite shows. Finish the cosiness factor by purchasing some plump pillows, fluffy throws and blackout blinds/ curtains to block out any light when needed.
The Bedroom
Your bedroom should be the most relaxing place in the world to you. It’s your personal space to retreat from the world, and whether it’s having an early night, sleeping in on a weekend or just lounging around with a book or Netflix, you want the space to feel cosy and comfortable. Giving it a good clear out and removing any clutter should be your first step, and then giving it a deep clean.
Bedrooms are particularly prone to dust mites due to the skin we shed while we sleep, and their waste can cause respiratory issues such as sneezing, coughing and blocked nose. This of course isn’t ideal when you’re trying to sleep! There’s nothing we can do to get rid of them completely, but deep cleaning and replacing bedding when needed can keep numbers down. Replace your mattress after seven years, your duvet after five and your pillows after one. Not only will your bed be more comfortable but you’ll reduce dust mites too. Buy yourself some soft sheets with a high thread count, these will feel great against the skin and make relaxing in bed so much nicer.
Decorating
Decorate in calming, neutral colours and again blackout blinds and curtains are essential for a good night’s sleep. You really need to take your sleep seriously for good health overall. Get into a good nighttime routine, and make your bedroom as comfortable and relaxing as possible.
The Bathroom
A hot bath or shower after a long day can be very soothing. Hot water can do wonders for relaxing tense muscles, but did you know it can even lower blood pressure? Relaxing in hot water can help to bring a sense of calm, it’s just a quiet space where you can clear your mind. These kinds of health benefits aren’t to be overlooked, since it’s essentially a free and accessible way to relax your body and mind.
To make it even better, you could makeover your bathroom if you know that you’re due an upgrade. How about a stunning shower cubicle along with a roll top bath and his and hers basins? This will give the bathroom a luxurious feel and you’ll enjoy spending time in it. Purchase some bath oils and other relaxing bath products, some fluffy new towels and a new bath mat. You’ll step out of the bathroom feeling clean, relaxed and amazing.

The Kitchen
Relaxing at home doesn’t necessarily mean lounging in bed, on the sofa or in the bath. It could mean spending quality time with friends and family, enjoying a nice meal and glass of wine. Smiling and laughing is good for your health, and is something you’re much more likely to do in the right company. A nice kitchen makes entertaining easy if you go with an open plan design with an island as it creates an informal seating area. A wine fridge, an ice dispensing refrigerator and other appliances make serving up drinks easy. Next time you have your kitchen remodelled, as well as thinking about the practical day to day functions, think about a design that best allows you to entertain guests too.
