When looking to have brighter, whiter, healthier teeth, you probably already know they should be brushed and cleaned at least twice a day. This is something we were taught as kids, after all. There’re a few other tips and tricks that can help with your teeth whitening quest. As well as a few top tips on caring for your teeth.
Here is a handful of the very best ones so that you can get back to smiling and feeling great about yourself.
Avoid A Dry Mouth
When you want to keep your teeth healthy, your best friend is simply water. One of the worst things that can happen to your mouth is that it dries out. Bacteria tends to target our teeth when we aren’t hydrated – and it commonly happens at night when we’re deep asleep.
Having a glass of water next to your bed and enjoying a sip every now and then will certainly help with this, though, as well as just staying hydrated throughout the day.
This is why it’s so important that we brush before going to bed, by the way, as a dry mouth that is still full of bacterias from the food we ate will be terrible for your teeth. You can check out instasmile in case you have dental problems that are beyond what you can fix at home. Or, if you’re looking for a professional teeth whitening clinic.
As well as making sure you don’t have a dry mouth, making sure you brush your teeth well with a good toothpaste is also going to make a huge difference. You don’t want to be going for a really cheap one, but it doesn’t have to be super expensive either, somewhere in the middle should be good. I honestly wouldn’t bother with aiming to go for a branded one either, i’d rather get something recommended by a dentist or to go or an activated charcoal toothpaste instead.
Oh, and consider getting yourself an electric toothbrush as well in case you haven’t already done so, it will make a huge difference to the cleanliness of your teeth and for your pure white smile.
Using A Good Toothbrush
One of the best ways you can keep your teeth in tip-top condition is to use a good toothbrush. It sounds so simple, but it can be hard to know what makes a good toothbrush. The best toothbrush you can use is actually one that feels right for you. Some people need a large brush head, whereas others prefer to use a small brush head.
An electric toothbrush does tend to clean better than manual ones according to research. However, if you don’t like the electric brushes such as Oral-B where the head oscillates from side to side, you could use a brush head that simply vibrates. This one from March Power that comes with a built-in water flosser could be ideal. At £39 it’s much cheaper than most electric toothbrushes and you don’t need a separate water flosser cluttering your bathroom.
Chew Sugar-Free Gum
We all know that flossing and brushing are the mainstays of a good dental care and oral health regime — we’ve all been taught this since we were kids (certainly the brushing bit). But don’t forget chewing! It might seem counter-intuitive, but dental associations around the world now insist on it.
Here’s why…Chewing sugar-free gum stimulates saliva, neutralises plaque acids and clears food debris. It also helps with the remineralisation of teeth after eating. In doing so, it reduces dental decay, which is crucial at a time when we’re all struggling to get to the dentist for our usual check-ups and hygienist appointments.
We’re also snacking a lot more during lockdown. Ideally we would be brushing more as a result, especially the kids. But that’s not always easy or practical. So chewing is a good stand-in to keep teeth clean and healthy.
Rinsing At The Right Time
Finally, we need to talk about how you rinse your mouth and how often you do it. While some dentists recommend that you avoid rinsing right after brushing so that the toothpaste can stay on your teeth for a bit longer, others say that it doesn’t really matter.
We’re none the wiser, of course, to stick to what you’ve been doing so far – but remember to rinse with a good mouthwash about half an hour after a meal. You don’t want to brush or rinse right after as your teeth are still a bit vulnerable after eating.
There might be a lot to keep in mind when it comes to caring for your teeth but, the more you get into it, the easier it will be for the routine to stick. And, of course, for your teeth to become brighter and healthier with time.
