Throughout the year gift giving seems to sneak up on us constantly; whether it’s Valentines Day, Birthdays, Christmas, Weddings…etc. I always find Valentine’s Day the hardest one to buy for. My husband and I have been together for almost 15 years so coming up with things to get him that I haven’t done before is getting harder and harder! One year we just decided not to bother at all – which was fine. We had a nice meal at home and watched a good film instead. Just spending time together like this is great but once in a while it’s nice to do something a bit special. Something to let him know that I do really appreciate him. So, incase you struggle too, here are a few unconventional gift ideas.
I feel your pain, and can totally relate to those moments when you just feel like throwing in the towel when it comes to presents, so I thought I’d do my homework and list some awesome findings to help you along the gift buying way. Non-Conventional Gift Ideas
OK, so this one might sound a little boring and not exactly romantic – on face value. However, if you think about it, naming your partner the beneficiary of your pension (should anything happen to you, it goes to her/him), is showing such a level of commitment.
This one might not be a great idea if you have only just started dating, if anything it would probably have the opposite effect! But, if you have been together for a few years, or live together or have a family together, this would be an amazing gift to give them. It would really show them you care and believe in your relationship; whether you are married or not or have children together or not. To be honest, I didn’t even know this was something you could do until recently but I think it’s a great idea, and definitely not something he/she would be expecting to receive for Valentine’s Day! However, before going ahead with this it would be good to get some advice from your pension provider astray will be able to give you all the in’s and out’s on how to go about doing this.

Paintballing
A voucher to go paintballing is a gift that’ll go down well with anyone who enjoys some fun – which should be everyone! This gift is perfect for any time of year (possibly not while its snowing) and any occasion, and it also can be enjoyed with family or friends of any size group. There are some paintball courses that have zones kitted out with incredible themes – such as movie inspired themes, graveyards, a zombie apocalypse and even war themes. This will certainly make his day…especially if he is anything like my husband!
An Ice Maker
An ice maker is a great gift for the couple that enjoy hosting, or some one who takes pride in having an at home bar. An ice maker is a machine that makes ice by itself….obviously! Guests can then help themselves to ice for their drinks, without having to dig around in your fridge – and scope out what you had for dinner last night. Plus, what a nice little romantic touch for an evening in with a beautifully cooked meal and an even better dessert!
Funky Socks
Not all guys are into the funky-sock trend, but a lot of men are! I often see a glimpse of a man’s socks – a pop of colour, some funky patterns or even things like Spiderman, or Batman. I think it’s one way they can bring a little of their personality to a corporate and let’s say it how it is, often very boring work suit.
A Sports Car Racing Experience
This gift will fit perfectly to any male out there – (so long as they’re over the legal driving age, of course.) Every guy dreams of getting behind the wheel of his favourite sports car, and racing around a track for hours on end – and this gift will make all his dreams come true! You’ll be the master of gift-giving after this!
Helicopter Tour
OK, so this one is one of the more expensive options and probably isn’t in most people’s budgets but I thought it was an amazing idea so wanted to include it – a helicopter tour over the city, or your local area, especially for those who enjoy photography, flying, or just marvelling at exceptional sights. This is an unconventional gift, but it would be oh-so worth it!
A Mug
It might sound a bit strange or boring but a mug is a very useful gift…and how often do you see men going out and buying themselves a nice mug for their tea or coffee?! Us women generally like to go out and buy homeware bits and bobs but most men (or at least the ones I know), aren’t interested at all! So, why not get them a nice new mug to enjoy their hot beverages in.
Gifts For Her
A Plush New Bath Robe
A woman always wants to feel comfortable and relaxed at home (why do you think we have so many onesies, thick pyjamas and snuggle socks) – so why not buy her a gorgeous, comfy bathrobe to lounge around in. If you want to be one step ahead and make it a little more personal, you could get it embroidered with her name – or perhaps “Queen of the house”, she’ll adore you after that…if she likes that kind of thing!
Homewares
It might sound like quite a boring gift but interior design has become such a huge thing lately that everyone is looking to make their house the best it possibly can be. So, a gift for the house (especially if they have just moved in), might be a great idea! With it being so cold, perhaps you could get her a beautiful, cozy blanket that you could both snuggle under together whilst watching a film and sipping hot chocolates. Or if that isn’t really your thing, maybe you could get her a huge bunch of her favourite flowers with a gorgeous vase to put them in. Herbal Detox Teas
Again, a slightly odd gift you might think but after Christmas or a celebration, filled with cake and chocolate goodies, maybe she would actually really appreciate a bit of a detox. One brand I have been loving lately is the Some Body Teatox 28 Day & Night Detox and Cleanse Tea Bags from Superdrug. The teas are super delicious and are also great in helping to get rid of trapped wind…as well as for detoxing! The idea is you have one of the day teabags during the day and one of the night tea bags before you go to bed to help promote healthy sleep.
Jewellery
Women love meaningful gifts that are personal and show that time and consideration have been put into them. One way to show her how much she means to you is through a sentimental piece of jewellery like a birthstone necklace perhaps, or one that holds a special date (like your wedding anniversary perhaps) and means something to you both. Plus, if nothing else, it will show her you remember her birthday/special day, so already you get brownie points for that!
Soaps
It might sound like an odd gift to give someone but you can get some really beautiful soaps these days with wonderful scent combinations and let’s face it, how often do we go out and buy ourselves nice smelling soaps…probably not that often! My mum, for instance, loves finding new and interesting soaps to add to her collection and to have on show in the bathrooms for guests to try when they come to stay. It makes her day finding, or being given a section of soaps.
Foodie Options
If she’s a foodie, bless her with a food tour (or, a food and wine tour/pairing). There are many places that offer experiences such as this – whether it’s a city food tour, a restaurant that offers tasting, or a wine farm that offers food and wine experiences.
A Mobile Beauty Therapist
What’s better than being pampered – in the comfort of your home! Most people get the conventional spa voucher, but this take on a spa day is unconventional and rather thoughtful, especially if she loves to relax at home. Get a voucher from a mobile therapist, who will come to her/your home and pamper her, without her having to move a muscle – literally.
