However, the thought of making your own vegan baguette can sound long and complicated. Who has time to make their own bread these days? Well actually, this vegan French bread recipe is so quick and easy to make.
Whether you can make bread with one eye closed, or haven’t ever attempted it, this vegan baguette recipe is one anyone can make. If you’re looking for a simple vegan recipe, give this a try!
The Price Of Supermarket Bread To Increase
It’s been in the news recently that the price of bread in supermarkets is likely to go up by around 20% in the next few months. This is due to the price of wheat looking to go up to a nine-year price high. It’s said the supermarkets are likely to take on some of the cost, however, some price increase is unavoidable for store-bought bread.
By making your own plant-based bread with active yeast, you can avoid the higher price flours such as wheat and opt for something more affordable such as plain flour, or even spelt.
The Benefits Of Homemade Bread
So, what better time to start making your own vegan-friendly bread? Plus, you know all the ingredients that have gone into it and I find homemade tastes so much better. Then of course there’s the fact that you can’t get fresher, or tastier than a loaf of bread straight from the oven!
Another great benefit of making your own French baguette is that you get to choose the type of flour you use. For this recipe, you could use buckwheat, spelt, plain, wholewheat, wheatflour, whichever one you like the best. Each one will come out slightly differently, so you could try all of them to find out which is your favourite flour to use.
Then of course another great benefit of baking your own bread is the cost. To make your own loaf of bread, or baguette, depending on the flour you use, is likely to be pennies!

How To Make The Crust Crunchy
There is actually a very simple way to ensure the crust on your golden brown loaf is crunchy. If you’re looking for that crunch when you bite into your baguette, all you have to do is add a small bowl of water to the oven while baking.
Also, having the oven up high and baking quickly will help to ensure you have a crispy loaf that crackles when you cut it open. Fluffy on the inside, crunchy on the outside.
However, if you want a softer crust, just don’t include the bowl of water in the oven and bake at a slightly lower temperature for a longer period of time.
Ways To Eat Vegan French Bread
Personally, we love to eat it while it’s still warm from the over. Slathered in salty vegan butter. The thought alone is mouthwatering!
However, you could also eat it cold as a sandwich perhaps. Baguettes can be perfect to take on picnics with you. Filled with your favourite combinations – cheese and pickle perhaps. Or maybe something a little more decadent like brie and cranberry sauce. You could even toast it in the oven and have the ultimate cheese on toast

A Simple Vegan Homemade Baguette Recipe
Equipment
- Oven
Ingredients
- 375 Grams Bread flourĀ – or all-purpose flour
- 1 Sachet Instant Yeast or active dry yeast
- 250 mls Warm Water NOT hot water
- 1 tsp Salt
Instructions
- Add the warm water and yeast into a bowl and mix gently
- Then add in the bread flour and salt and mix in to a dough
- Knead gently until the flour is completely incorporated
- After you have folded the dough, leave it in the bowl with a tea towel over the top to rest for 45 minutes to 1 hour
- Preheat oven to 230 degrees C.
- Once the hour is up, turn your dough out of the bowl, knock the air out and roll in to a sausage shape on some baking paper. Do this on the baking tray (or sheet pan) that will be going into the oven so you don't have to move it again later. Make sure the dough is seam side down for a better finish.
- Half fill a small oven-proof bowl with water and place in the oven. Leave this in the oven as your loaf bakes.
- Then place your loaf into the oven and bake for 25 minutes (or less if you are doing half loaves). Once baked, it's best to leave it for 15 minutes to allow it to settle. However, you can let it rest for 30 minutes – or longer if you don't want it to be quite so warm inside.
Recipe Notes
The bowl of (room temperature) water will help to create a crispier crust on the baguette.
If you want to make smaller vegan baguettes, you would simply divide the dough into smaller equal pieces and cook for a few minutes less.
This vegan French bread recipe is one you can make with very simple ingredients that you can make your own by adding more flavours if you so choose.
